In this class, students will learn about music and movement through the art of conducting along with Harry Potter! We will learn the basic movements of conducting along with music, learn to keep a steady beat, and get to experience what it is like to be a maestro. All of these skills will be learned by actively conducting along with the music that we are listening to in the class. We will discuss the roles conductors have in an orchestra or band and all the fun they have leading their ensemble. The focus of this class is NOT of the technical terms of conducting patters but rather the focus on the emotional and musical ideas conductors portray to musicians in order to partake in a sense of creative expression. Professional conductors portray this beautifully, and the art of conducting is not about the patterns they choose but rather through the movement and emotional expression they display. No background knowledge is needed to partake in this course! It is recommended that the student has enough space in the room for movement, as the majority of our activities will be standing up. This course is great for students who want to get better at keeping a steady beat, learn interesting facts about conductors, and enjoy music through movement. The pieces we will be conducting are as follows: 1.) Harry's Wondrous World by John Williams 2.) Hedwig's Theme by John Williams 3.) Mr. Longbottom Flies by John Williams 4.) The Quidditch Match by John Williams I have no affiliation with the brand Harry Potter. This class uses orchestral music to teach students how to conduct in a fun and meaningful way.
