Class Experience

In this one time course, the students' time will be divided into instruction, independent work, and sharing with the class!

First, I will get the kids familiar with the Chrome Music Lab website and how to get to Song Maker. We will discuss how to use the colorful blocks to make melodies, how to use the circles and triangles to make rhythms, how to adjust the tempo, and how to adjust the instrument sounds. We will also discuss how to save their song in order to share it at the end.

Once students are familiar with Song Maker, I will give them some time to work independently to create a song. I do not give them a ton of boundaries so they can really use their imaginations to be creative with how their song looks and sounds.

The final 15 minutes of class will allow students to share the songs they have created. Students can give each other feedback and be inspired by each other. This is always my favorite part of class, because I personally enjoy seeing what students come up with!

Once this class is over, students can continue to visit Chrome Music Lab to create more songs and explore the other activities on the page.

Learning Goals

Students will learn music vocabulary and apply it to making a song using technology. Melody, rhythm, and tempo will be used for students to create original songs on Chrome Music Lab. Students will also have a social emotional connection when they share their songs with each other!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!

My name is Bethany Borden. My love for music goes way back to childhood. I have also developed a love for technology over the past 10 years. I sing, play the trumpet, play the ukulele, and have real world experience in the field of technology developing apps and games. My passions are music and technology, and I love connecting with students using both mediums. I hope to inspire students here at Outschool to be creative and learn valuable skills through music education and coding.

I have a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Central Florida and hold professional teaching licenses in Florida and North Carolina. I taught music in the public school system for 16 years before recently changing directions. I received Teacher of the Year at my elementary school in Orlando, FL in 2010. I have put on musical productions of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast at the elementary level, and I've lead after school choirs, coding clubs, and sign language clubs at various schools. I have also given private lessons for a number of years.

Music provides students the opportunity to develop their brains in a creative way and gain valuable and fun skills. Whether students are playing an instrument, singing, dancing, or creating music in technology, they get to express themselves, be creative, and have fun. Music is also one of the only things that connects everybody. I try to meet students where they are at in their ability level and interests. I want students to leave my class feeling inspired, happy, and connected.

Coding is another amazing way for kids to problem solve, use engineering and math skills without even knowing it, be artistic, and bring their ideas to life! I look forward to showing students how to use the Scratch website to create video games, bring stories to life, and make animations. As society operates more and more on computers, knowing how to communicate with computers will be key in the future. Your child can get an early start now!
