Communications & Public Speaking - I Am Confident!
Class experience
I generally allow my learners to keep their cameras off but in this class because it is a public speaking class, cameras being on at certain times such as when speeches or other speaking activities are occurring cameras will be strongly encouraged as that is part of becoming comfortable with giving presentations. Course Outline Week #1 - Evaluation of public speaking skills; discussion of social anxiety, especially when it is performance based Week #2 - Steps to combat communication...
• Evaluate public speaking skills - Recognize social anxiety in regards to presentations • Identify perception of self including self-esteem, self-concept and accuracy and distortion of self-perceptions • Demonstrate how to establish and maintain relationships through the use of interpersonal communication - Managing interpersonal conflict with different conflict management styles • Identify different types of communication styles and appropriate disclosure - How teens use the Johari Window for increased self-awareness • Develop, research, organize, and deliver formal public speeches including an informational and a persuasive speech • Recognize how to communicate within diverse environments
My degrees are a BS in Psychology, an MS in Mental Health Counseling and all but dissertation for a PHD in Psychology. I was a counselor for 10 years and have taught psychology courses and courses in communications & public speaking for the past 20 years. I have a passion working with teenagers both in the counseling setting and as a teacher sharing my knowledge of a variety of different psychology courses. In public speaking and communications I have focused on increasing confidence, public speaking skills and conflict resolution among many other areas that help to increase a teen's comfort level in public speaking and giving presentations. I am currently a Director of Education and Compliance for an educational facility.

No concerns with content. If a learner brings up content that is disturbing to other learners then I will make sure to intervene and will let the parents know if necessary. In all of my classes I let the learners know up front that if any of the topics make them uncomfortable, they are welcome to leave the class and I will schedule a make-up with them to cover another topic of interest to them. I have never had a problem with this as the learners know that I am sensitive to their needs and they generally feel free to talk to me if they are uncomfortable.
