Students will learn how to write a compelling personal statement in a fun and interactive classroom environment. The class is structured to enable students to video chat and write with the teacher, and will include exercises to practice editing to learn firsthand. During the first 5 minutes of class, the teacher will build a rapport with students and briefly discuss the course material. The next 25 minutes of class will be dedicated to discussing the purpose of a personal statement, which areas to focus on, and how to create a personal statement that is concise, unique and compelling. The next 5-10 minutes will allow students to think of ideas and write a short piece about themselves. The final 5-10 minutes of class will be dedicated to reviewing and wrapping up the lesson with any questions that students may have.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the essential concepts of how to write a compelling and unique personal statement. The class will educate students how to systematically create a personal statement. In doing so, students will learn how to express their ideas concisely and effectively, thus conveying a well thought out personal statement for their college applications.
