This class is a great stand alone art class or a great add-on to my Hungry Caterpillars & Grouchy Ladybugs: Exploring Story Elements with Eric Carle class! We'll learn how Eric Carle creates his own painted paper and make our own, explore basic insect anatomy, and then create our own collage insects ala Eric Carle. The first class will cover Eric Carle's painting technique and guide students in painting their own papers. The second class will go over basic insect anatomy and students will use their own painted papers to create their insects.
Learning Goals
Students will:
* Recognize that explorative play with materials can inspire ideas for visual art and design
* Investigate various properties of tools and materials
* Understand and use basic insect anatomy vocabulary (head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, wing)
* Create their own painted papers using various colors and tools
* Create their own insects taking inspiration from a well-known artist and author, Eric Carle
Other Details
Supply List
* Paints - Tempera, Crayola washable paint, or something similar is ideal as it thick. Watercolors and acrylic do not work well for this project * Paint brushes - large and small ideal, but not necessary * Texture tools - examples include plastic forks, toilet paper roll, Playdough tools that create texture when rolled, bubble wrap, bottle caps. Get creative! * White paper - can be printer or construction. Larger pieces work well for the gluing phase in the second class, but aren't necessary * Construction paper - for painting, any color, 3 pieces * Newspaper or table cloth for managing mess ;) Consider a space where you can place painted papers to dry as well. * Print out of insect shapes - optional. You can simply free-draw shapes from the images on the screen * Scissors and glue (glue sticks work well here) ** All paints, brushes, and paper can be purchased on Amazon or at stores such as Target, Walmart, IKEA, Michael's or other craft stores. **
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
This class is such a fun blend of art and science! Children are often very familiar with Eric Carle and his art. They also are quite fascinated with insects. I wanted to offer a follow up art class to compliment my Hungry Caterpillars & Grouchy Ladybugs: Exploring Story Elements with Eric Carle literature class and this is a perfect fit! It is also a great opportunity to encourage students interest in the animal and insect world, expanding their vocabulary, as well as encourage them to create their own Eric Carle-esque stories based on their new insects.
