Class Experience

This class is a great entry point into the world of coding with Python for your kids. In this extremely accessible course, students will use Visual Studio Code to learn the fundamentals of coding through engaging, interactive classes and fun, hands-on projects!

Python is one of the most accessible programming languages available and extremely popular with professional developers due to it’s simplified syntax and not complicated, which gives more emphasis on natural language. Python is easy to learn and used in everything from artificial intelligence, to space exploration, augmented reality, to self driving cars. Python apps can run on basically any modern machine. 

In this course, students will first learn the fundamentals of coding with Python. Each class will cover different topics that build on each other. Your child will learn to build python apps and we will guide them every step of the way. 


Week 1: An Intro to Python
This first week will feature an overview of the Python programming language and the Visual Studio Code IDE. Students will be introduced to coding by writing a simple Hello World program. 

Week 2: Beginning Coding (Fundamentals)
In this class, we will go over some key programming terms and fundamentalssuch as variables, booleans, strings, integers, floats and more. 

Week 3: Calculator App with Kivy
In this class, students will be introduced to the Kivy framework for app building by creating a simple calculator app in Kivy and Python.

Week 4: Gaming with Python - PONG Part 1
In this class, students will be introduced to the Kivy framework for games and create a simple PONG game using Kivy and Python Code.

Week 5: Gaming with Python - PONG Part 2
In this class, students will continue working and enhance their simple PONG game by adding extra graphics, animations and sounds.

Week #6 - Rock Paper Scissors
In this class, students will create a simple PONG game using Kivy and Python Code.

Week 7: Building a Text Based Adventure Game Part 1
In this class will work on setting up a text-based adventure game written entirely in code. 

Week 8: Building a Text Based Adventure Game - Part 2
In this class students will complete their text-based adventure game and enhance it through the implementation of by adding extra graphics, animations and sounds.
Learning Goals
For this class, students don't need to have any previous coding experience. Python is a great entry into design and programming skills. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of coding with Python.

Computer Requirements: 
Windows 11, macOS or Ubuntu (22.04+) - strongly recommended. 

Anything below Windows 10 has a lot of trouble running Python. 

While there are countless editors that be used to program in Python (PyCharm being the most popular), In this class we will be primarily using Visual Studio Code (https://code.visualstudio.com) for all of our Python Coding.
