Class Experience

Computer science is essential for students to learn at an early age, as it helps in all subject areas. Writing code helps spark creativity and problem solving within your child. Minecraft is a fun and easy way to set the foundation for writing code. We will visit code.org and explore Blockly style coding. This is at the very beginner level and works like a puzzle, so students as young as 7 years old can navigate it.

Computer science is a fast-growing field and is rarely offered at the elementary level. When it is offered in schools, it is usually with high school. However, software engineer jobs are expected to have a 22% growth in the next ten years. Your child will learn computer science through coding in this course so that he/she can be better prepared when going to high school and college, not to mention have fun doing it.
Learning Goals
We will dive into the world of Minecraft, a popular gaming module for young kids to work with. This holiday camp is something that your child can participate in to keep his/her brain activated while out for the holiday season. In this 3-day coding holiday camp, this will be the layout:
Day 1: Minecraft Designer. This piece of coding will help get the students acquainted with the different types of codes and will be the easiest of the three days. It's a great starting point.
Day 2: Minecraft Adventurer. In this coding game, students will code for Steve or Alex to explore the world of Minecraft.
Day 3: Minecraft Voyage Aquatic. Today we will be coding underwater sequences!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, everyone! Welcome to Outschool.

My name is Kim Spicer and I am a certified elementary school teacher, former actor, and a mom to a teenager. I have a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Before teaching, I was an actor in New York. I gained a Studio Theatre Acting Certificate from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NY. I have been teaching for over 11 years, 5 of those years of which were STEM. During this time, I created my own curriculum for students based on the standards from the classroom. This year I am teaching the gifted and talented students. This has been such a great experience for me, because I get to combine my multi-faceted backgrounds such as STEM, acting, etc.

I have created a teaching style that is fun and energetic, while also educational. By molding my love for teaching and acting together, I keep the kids fully engaged the entire time! We always have so much fun! Students leave my classroom with a smile on their faces and more knowledge about science, engineering, coding, a sense of self, and more confidence.

I look forward to meeting you all and having some fun while learning!
