Class Experience
In this ongoing one-on-one class, your child will learn how to write code using the website code.org. This is a fun and easy way to learn blockly-style coding. This website is designed for all ages and starts the students off with a very simple and easy-to-read style of coding. Here is the breakdown of the weeks: Week 1: Week of June 28: Flappy Code Week. We will concentrate on the drag-and-drop method of coding. This is the easiest way to start in the coding world. Week 2: Week of July 7: Dance Party Week. This week will spark the creative aspect of coding. In this class, students will create an "event" using some of today's popular music. Week 3: Week of July 14: Star Wars Week. Coding this week will help students understand how to code droids while creating their own video game. Week 4: Week of July 21: Minecraft Designer Week. This class is available for students that want to sharpen their creativity and problem-solving skills through Minecraft. Week 5: No Class this week. Week 6: Week of August 4: Sports/Basketball. Let's see if you can create a fun basketball video Week 7: Week of August 11: Scratch! The long-awaited Scratch class where YOU decide what you want your game to have! The possibilities are endless. https://scratch.mit.edu/ Week 8: Week of August 18: Finish working on our dinosaur story. Week 9: August 22: Continue working on our dinosaur story. Week of August 29: Start working on our Jungle story. Week of September 5: Animate Your Name! This first week we will learn how to make our name come to life! We can make our name move, get bigger, then smaller... Anything you can think of! Week of September 12: Glide Around. This week we will work with animals that know how to fly. You can even make your character fly, if you want. Week of September 19: Animate a Character. Make your name in a digital field and watch it come to life. Week of September 26: Change character size and costume. Who says an elephant has to be bigger than a dog? You make the rules on the size of your creatures. Week of October 3: Make flying objects/animals fly. Code your sprites to fly off into the sunset or code your character throwing a bowl of pasta across the room. Week of October 10: Make Music. Have you ever wanted to play an instrument? This week we will be learning how to code our own music. Week of October 17: Let's play a MAGIC TRICK! Make your sprite disappear! Week of October 24: Learn how to use the arrow keys to make moving your sprite a lot easier. Week of October 31: Spinning sprites! Spin your ball when it rolls across the floor. Week of November 7: Let's record a sound! Are you ready to hear your OWN VOICE in your project? Week of November 14: Add visual effects! Let's get creative and add some fun visual effects to our sprites this week! Let's get to morphing them into something real unusual.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, everyone! Welcome to Outschool.
My name is Kim Spicer and I am a certified elementary school teacher, former actor, and a mom to a teenager. I have a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Before teaching, I was an actor in New York. I gained a Studio Theatre Acting Certificate from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NY. I have been teaching for over 11 years, 5 of those years of which were STEM. During this time, I created my own curriculum for students based on the standards from the classroom. This year I am teaching the gifted and talented students. This has been such a great experience for me, because I get to combine my multi-faceted backgrounds such as STEM, acting, etc.
I have created a teaching style that is fun and energetic, while also educational. By molding my love for teaching and acting together, I keep the kids fully engaged the entire time! We always have so much fun! Students leave my classroom with a smile on their faces and more knowledge about science, engineering, coding, a sense of self, and more confidence.
I look forward to meeting you all and having some fun while learning!
