Students will be required to practice between classes to ensure notes are learned and ready for polishing as a group.Class Experience
In our two classes together, we are going to have fun learning about the secular history and fun facts of a few Christmas songs. Start learning your pieces early so they are ready to play for others leading up to Christmas! Students are required to be able to read music on the staff (C position and middle C position, G position at least). This is typically students in a level 2 piano method or higher. If you are unsure if your student meets this criteria, please feel free to send a message to the teacher and I am happy to help! All students will receive the music for the following songs along with accompanying music history/theory activities. We will be choosing a minimum of three songs to work on in depth during class but will discuss all of the songs briefly to help students understand how to practice it and work on it independently. Students will receive a printable book “Intermediate Piano Repertoire” by Carol Matz from the teacher’s studio license. Students will work as a group to choose their favourite pieces from the selections provided to work together in class and are welcome to try any others on their own after. Music will be posted 24 hours before class, please ensure you are able to print the music prior to class and have it ready to play. Always have a pencil ready for class and ensure that you are set up with your piano/keyboard.

Michelle Wheeler grew up with a passion for music in any form. With the encouragement of her band teachers she flourished as a flautist and continued on after high school to complete her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Regina. In her desire to continue her education she studied flute with Marie-Noelle Berthelet at the University of Regina to complete her Masters of Music Performance. She has trained in Music for Young Children, Kindermusik, and is working towards Level 1 certification in KinderFlute and Blocki Flute methods.
Currently Michelle is an active learner and is enjoying working with a community of piano teachers and professors to learn and share strategies for teaching piano to beginners. Michelle will complete her certification through the Royal Conservatory of Music as an elementary piano specialist in December. The basis of this intensive course is to work with top piano pedagogues and learn techniques and strategies to make her students well rounded and successful. Though already an accomplished piano and flute teacher in her own right, Michelle is always wanting to learn more and share ideas with others to give students the best possible experience.
Michelle has worked as the program coordinator for the Heart of the City Piano Program, secretary for Saskatchewan Angel Dresses, and board member for the Regina Eastview Daycare. She speaks French and English and enjoys enhancing her music classes with the French language as well as sign language. She loves going for walks, swimming, and spending time with her three children Roch, Adelle, and Lilah.
