In this class students will take a trip around the world and learn how children their age celebrate Christmas around the world. For this lesson we will stop in Russia. We will read about Russia discuss the traditions together. Afterwards students will be given a craft project on a pdf for Russia that they can start and then finish after the class. Students will also be given a passport and country booklet in order to track this adventure and others they may take in the future. My goal for the class is most importantly for students to have fun and learn new and interesting ways that people celebrate Christmas around the world, specifically for this class, the country is Russia. We will start the class by learning different facts about Russia including its location, capital, flag, language, and other basic information. We will continue our quest of learning about Russia by reading about the country's Christmas traditions. Next, we will have a class discussion allowing the student to discuss their thoughts. We will follow up by having a special Christmas craft for Russia which is a babushka (grandmother) puppet. The time may go over depending on the speed of the children and their craftsmanship, so they can either continue to work online or finish as homework.
Learning Goals
Students will learn country facts about Russia, as well as learn about Christmas traditions in Russia.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Christmas traditions in general can be a sensitive topic due to religion and different cultures. We will be looking at Christmas traditions from a secular point of view, making sure to look at the traditions from multiple different perspectives around the world. Also, I know that sometimes Christmas discussions can be tricky due to talking about presents they want to receive, or have received, but I will keep this conversation focused on traditions in order to prevent this dilemma.
Supply List
The printables will be provided before the class. Students will need crayons/markers/colored pencils, scissors, glue/paste, and string or yarn for this class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
