What's included
1 live meeting
1 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This 90-minute experience is for learners with strong previous experience with chess (such as completing our Beginner course or beyond, or having other background including at least a thorough understanding of the rules of piece movement including castling, and the ability to play a game towards Checkmate), who would like to see what it’s like to play competitively. Students will be paired against each other in timed virtual games of chess, and progress through four tournament rounds of Swiss-style pairings (no one is ever eliminated from the tournament, no matter how many times they lose). Each round will have a time control of 10 minutes per player. The instructor will spend the first few minutes of the class teaching about the most common conventional practices and formats of competitive chess tournaments, how timed chess games differ from traditional chess games, and other related concepts. During the tournament rounds the instructor will assist each of the pairings of students with confusing and unfamiliar situations (objectively and without bias towards either competitor), but will provide coaching on these types of specific scenarios in-between rounds when possible, elaborating after the fourth round for the benefit of all of the students, before announcing the winner(s) and celebrating their accomplishment, and celebrating the rest of the participants’ achievements as well.
Learning Goals
After this experience, learners will leave with a better understanding of how competitive chess tournaments are structured, and will feel better prepared to compete and win against peers of their age and skill levels.

Parental Guidance
This class uses the external website ChessKid to facilitate online chess games between classmates. ChessKid is 100% committed to safety, and meets Outschool's standards for Safety and Privacy. That being said, ChessKid's policies require parental consent for users under the age of 13; by enrolling in this class, you are providing that consent. If your child does not already have a ChessKid account, we will create one for them, and can provide parental administrative access to that account at any time upon your request. For more information, contact us before enrolling, or see: https://www.chesskid.com/legal
Supply List
We organize all of our virtual chess games on ChessKid.com; each student, after enrolling in this event, will be provided by us a one-month Gold Membership to ChessKid (a $10 value). We believe that this is the safest and most comprehensive learning tool we can use to facilitate our in-class virtual games. Students are encouraged (but not required) to use this website for any practice games that they play before the day of the event, to acclimate themselves to the interface. After the end of the one-month period, students not continuing into one of our other courses will still have limited access to ChessKid to play virtual games at their leisure, but their archived game history will eventually disappear.

Central New York Chess is a New York State registered Non Profit Organization, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
