Students can continue to compose new puzzles after class and share them with me for feedback any time.Class Experience
Solving puzzles is one of the best ways to improve at chess. Creating your own puzzles can open new doors of understanding and creativity. In this class we will quickly introduce some instructive and unusual chess compositions. Using the Board Editor, Analysis, and Study functions on Lichess.org we will learn everything needed to start creating our own puzzles right away. Student will have time in class to invent, save, and share their original puzzles with other classmates. Students will improve their understand of tactical chess concepts through direct manipulation and experimentation on the raw materials of the game. We will make time for discussion and feedback aimed at refining our compositions. This is a one time class but can be repeated indefinitely. Classes are focused on student work so every class covers new ideas and strategies. **Prerequisites** Students should be very confident about the fundamentals of chess including how the pieces move, basic checkmate patterns, and the names of the squares before taking this class. If they need a refresher please take my beginner crash course (Chess for Sparrows) and/or my general chess club (Chess for Tigers) first. The ability to work in another window or tab during the Zoom call is essential. **Lichess.org** Students DO NOT need a Lichess.org account to participate in class. If they do register an account please turn on Kid Mode enabling Kid Mode: https://lichess.org/account/kid

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Boston University
When school went remote in March of 2020 my chess club (where I taught full time) thrived. This led to curriculum development, program development, and coaching work at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, SciGenius, BudBe, Zinkers, and the Chicago Chess Foundation. Before that I taught for three years at the Berkeley Chess School.
Chess is on the cutting edge of a shift toward globally connected, self directed, and play oriented education. I am thrilled to be part of it. As a self taught player currently rated over 2000 I have become an expert in using the most advanced learning tools available to bring lessons to life. I love helping young people discover and excel at this beautiful game.
