The purpose and design of this introductory elementary class are to get students excited about science and especially chemistry. We will be doing hands-on experiments and fun activities to help students see the connections between the chemical and the real world. You will even be able to eat some of your experiments. I taught Science in a private school and my goal is always to make learning science fun and engaging. I am an experienced Home School Teacher, ESL Online Teacher, and Counselor with a Master's of Social Work degree. I have over 10 years of experience teaching reading, science, and math subjects via homeschool, private school, summer camps, and virtually. I have over 13 years of Social Work experience with a concentration in cognitive behavior and child welfare. I am TESOL certified and have taught virtual ESL courses for over 3 years to Pre-K and elementary students.
A supply list includes: -jars -measuring cups -1 popsicle stick, -sand, flour, salt, baking soda, cornstarch, and coffee grinds - sand, rice, punched paper holes, salt, pins Epsom salts, table salt, stirring spoons sugar - glass jar - paper clip - food coloring - water - pencil - string *pipe cleaner could substitute for string and paper clip baking soda, vinegar, plastic baggie, measuring spoon pH indicator strips, eyedropper, wax paper, masking tape
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Parental supervision is required for each lab. Lab Safety handout will be posted in the classroom and discussed in class. By following safety protocols, an activity can be made safer, it possibly may not be totally safe. Accidents can still happen. This is especially true when teaching remotely. In this case, as in all others, absolute caution must be exercised by a reasonable and responsible adult who is supervising each lab activity. Each lab includes household materials but required parental supervision. Please see the supply list listed below.
