Class Experience

Students will be taught that atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. They will learn about the three subatomic particles and their respective charge and that the number of subatomic particles in an atom can be calculated from the atom's atomic number and mass number. We will then determine how the number of electrons correlate with the electronic configuration and how to draw the atomic model for an element. Power point slides will be provided and students will be encouraged to interact and ask questions. The class will be interactive and students will be given differentiated questions and quizzes to check understanding. No prior experience is required.

Learning Goals

1. To describe the basic structure of an atom.
2. To calculate the subatomic particles in an atom.
3. To draw the atomic model for a given element.
4. To determine the electronic configuration of different atoms.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Experienced, determined, passionate and friendly Science Teacher. I’ve been a teacher of science for over 10 years where I specialise specifically in Chemistry and Biology. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and Chemistry, a Postgraduate Diploma in Science Education, Qualified Teachers Status within the United Kingdom,National Professional Qualification in Lead Teaching (NPQLT) and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Science. I provide an engaging and stimulating learning experience which enable students to comprehend scientific concepts allowing them to make informed decisions. I’ve taught Chemistry, Biology and Physics to secondary school students (ages 11-19) and integrated science to elementary school students (ages 8-12).

I enjoy teaching science because science is everywhere. Students who learn to ask questions, observe, set up possible answers, experiment, keep records and think independently will grow up finding life challenging and worthwhile. They will also have the ability to adapt to a changing world. Being a science teacher enables me to help children see that science is all around them and that even the smallest patch of grass or pavement can reveal volumes about their world.

My philosophy of education is that every classroom has its own unique community; my role as the teacher will be to provide a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Also, to assist each child in developing their own potential and learning styles.
