Class Experience

In this second Chemistry bite, we are going to look at the volume, density, mass. We will explore how temperature affects each phase and make real-world connections. Each week we will discuss a concept, apply an activity or demonstration, and then each student will be given instructions to assess their learning during the week. I believe students learn best by doing and teaching others what they learned. Hands-on learning gives students opportunities to connect the world around them. Some activities will require parental supervision because safety is my top priority in the activities we will do.

Week 1: Heat and Temperature
               Activity: Hot Soup
               Homework: Illustrating Conduction
Week 2: Stop Changing Part 1
              Activity: Using Energy
              Homework: Making Water Molecules
Week 3: Stop Changing Part 2
               Activity: Using and Reading Thermometers
               Homework: Drying Paper Towels
Week 4: Mr. Freeze
              Activity: Freezing Points of Liquids
              Homework: Making Ice Cream
Week 5: I'm Melting
Activity: The three States of Water
              Homework: Explore More about Water
Learning Goals
Students will learn all about volume, density, and mass as it pertains to the water molecule. We will explore the different phases of water and learn how to create our own experiments to test our concepts.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Katina, I am in sunny Orlando, Florida. I have been a teacher for over eighteen years. I have taught Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Anthropology, Environmental Science, Test Prep, bible, Speech and creative writing. I have a double master's degree in General Science and Divinity. I have taught at middle, high school and at the college levels and I have homeschooled my two children since pre-kindergarten.
Learning is about being able to teach someone else. If a student is unable to teach another student, parent or friend something they learned in classed, then I have failed as a teacher. Learning can without a doubt be fun and exciting. As a teacher I use props, singing and humor to get my students excited about the class and with what they are learning. One personal thing about me is I am a collector, I collect hot wheel cars. I have about sixty in my collection so far and can't wait to see what to add next to my collection.
