This course is intended for students with disabilities who may require explicit instruction in social communication skills such as including others in play, asking for help, or when and how to take a break. The group is intentionally small but does need at least two students enrolled in order to run. Using video-modeling lessons with real-life scenarios, students practice social communication skills in a supportive environment. Includes interactive games, worksheets and resources for use at home. We will then do a greeting and a short introduction to the topic. Content may be offered at a variety of academic levels depending on the learners in the group. Content includes: September: Emotional Recognition October: Self-Regulation November: Play Skills December: Perspective Taking January: Basic Conversation Skills February: Conversation Topics March: Nonverbal Communication (such as personal space) April: Situational Awareness May: Friendship No reading is required. Parents may stay to the side of the learner but must not be present on camera. Students must agree to have video on throughout the entire class to allow the teacher to monitor situations and problem solve as needed. However, if a student needs a break at any time, they may turn off their sound and video as needed. This class is intended for learners with disabilities who want an opportunity to socialize and learn communication skills. Learners that use a device for communication, only use short phrases, or want to use the chat function instead of speaking are encouraged to join. Handouts available after each class.
