Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner - Intermediate Level
During these 8 lessons, we will learn what it means to become a Character Designer for an animated show or movie! All the movies we know and love, like Shrek, Finding Nemo, and Minions, started at one point or another with a drawing. In each class, we will not just have fun drawing new characters, but we will also learn tools to design characters ready for an animated production.

Topic for each class:

- Class 1: What is Character Design?
- Class 2: Idea Exploration
- Class 3: Shapes & Silhouettes
- Class 4: Character Turnaround
- Class 5: Expression Sheet
- Class 6: Basic Colour Theory
- Class 7: Expressive Posing & Attitude
- Class 8: Character Line Up

In each class, we will introduce a new concept of Character Design, built upon what we have seen during the last lessons. Each concept will be presented with a small game. Once we all know what we are seeing in that class, we will start a practical activity that will take up most of the class, and each student will work on their own. (The teacher will always stay with the students in case they have a question.) At the end of the practical activity, we will have a short summary of what we learned that day, and students will have the opportunity to share their drawings. (Students are not required to show their drawings if they don't want to.) Additionally, at the end of class, students will be given homework to practice for the next class. (Homework is not mandatory.)

I believe that drawing is a very personal art form, so no student will be forced to participate in class more than they want to. However, I would like to encourage all students not to compare themselves with the drawings of their classmates. Each of us has our own style and our unique way of expressing ourselves.
Learning Goals
Our goal is for each student to understand the difference between simply drawing characters and designing characters with enough detail for use in an animated show. By the end of the course, each student will have created their own set of character.

Supply List
Please ensure your child brings their preferred drawing or painting tools to each class. This could be as simple as a sheet of paper and a pencil, or it could include a computer or an iPad.
