Hello, fellow debaters! Your job is to take the OPPOSING VIEW of my position in this informal debate, so come to class with your research, statistics, and sources ready for “friendly battle.” As we debate back and forth using our resources, you will have 30 minutes to try to change my mind. Public Speaking is cited as one of the biggest fears of adults, so learning to be a confident speaker is a worthy goal for anyone. Becoming an effective writer and speaker may empower you to outperform peers in essay writing, speeches, contests, debates, college admissions, scholarships, and interviews. Public Speaking combines both written and oral skills to create the perfect blend for a powerful first impression! This class is for students who have some prior experience with debate and/or have taken some prior classes on the components of a debate. It will be vital in this class to have both camera and audio ON since both verbal and non-verbal (motions, eye contact, facial expressions, etc.) communication is essential to the public speaking and debate process. The students will need to do some homework on the topic BEFORE class so they are prepared to present their point of view in class. There will be a debate tips document sent with the welcome message after registering for the class. This class will be a relaxed, informal debate setting to give students practice honing their public speaking and debate skills. TOPIC: People should be allowed to vote by mail. CHANGE MY MIND!
Learning Goals
Our goal for this class is to effectively debate a topic using research, statistics, and sources we bring to class.

It will also require a basic level of comfort speaking in a small group since they will need to present the opposing position in this class.
