A lifetime of practicing and getting more confident with using the calligraphy pen.Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner Level
Students will be taught how to hold their calligraphy pen and proper handling for creating the letters. Students will learn all of the letters in the english alphabet and numerals in an italic font. The class is paced carefully, so that a beginner will not get overwhelmed and those with some experience will revisit the techniques for improving their practice. The class involves basic handling, posture, caring for the pen and some beginning techniques. Depending on their skill level, learners will also cover some techniques for spacing and be well set for continued practice on their own. I encourage students to develop their own style, once they get confident in following the basics for this Italic font.
Learning Goals
Learners will be introduced to creating the numerals, lower and upper case letters of the alphabet, using the calligraphy pen.
Learners will learn proper handling, posture and caring for the pen and some beginning techniques.
Other Details
Pre-Requisites
Students need a calligraphy pen. The best option is the type with a cartridge.
Supply List
Must have: 1) A cartridge filled calligraphy pen with a Medium nib (A Sheaffer viewpoint Calligraphy Fountain Pen with black or blue ink is an excellent choice for a beginner, and costs about $7.00 with Amazon.) You do not need the large kits with all the different color ink, to get started. I do not recommend using the felt tip pens for learning calligraphy. 2) Lined paper or Notebook paper for getting started. 3) Ruler or straight edge. Optional, most helpful: 1) Calligraphy practice papers are awesome for students to use, as well because it has the lines for making the necessary angle.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
I have been a practicing Artist and Teacher in the public school system for 25 years. I believe that the basics create a strong foundation for learning and allowing students to gain the confidence they need for continuing with their own drawing style and future artistic projects. I have learned that making mistakes is part of the process and the more comfortable students get with that concept, the better their artwork turns out.
