US Grade 5 - 8
"Ferb, I know what we're going to do today!" Let's discuss literary themes, devices, and formulas by using examples from cartoons, primarily focusing on the classic animated tv series Phineas and Ferb. This 6 week long class will help your learner understand traditions of literature by deconstructing the elements that go into a Phineas and Ferb episode. We will discuss one or two episodes per class and corresponding themes as well as observe examples in classic literature. Learners will be expected to watch the week's episodes before class so that they are prepared to discuss them. Before our final class, I will encourage learners to create their own Phineas and Ferb episodes by following the examples that we discussed in class. For our final class, we will share our Phineas and Ferb inspired writings. The class schedule will be as follows: Class 1 Episodes: Rollercoaster and Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror. Literary themes/devices/formulas: Plot, Running gags, and Backstory. Class 2 Episode: Phineas and Ferb Star Wars Literary themes/devices/formulas: Allusions and Parody. Class 3 Episodes: Knot My Problem and Mind Share Literary themes/devices/formulas: Tropes and more Allusions and Parody. Class 4 Episode: Sidetracked Literary themes/devices/formulas: Metaphor, Backstory vs. Flashback, Cliche, and Irony. Class 5 Episodes: Phineas and Ferb's Musical Cliptastic Countdown and Brain Drain Literary themes/devices/formulas: Prosody (in the Phineas and Ferb songs). Class 6 Create and share your Phineas and Ferb episodes! Final class reflections Throughout this course, learners will gain a familiarity of literary elements that will help them better understand and appreciate classics of literature. Discussing the literary themes, devices, and formulas will also create more confident writers. When learners understand the mechanics behind a well-written Phineas and Ferb episode, they will be able to apply the same literary elements in their own writing. So what should we do today? Study cartoons of course!
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Not only do I love to deconstruct a fine piece of writing, I also love to laugh. With a couple kiddos of my own and what feels like an endless supply of nieces and nephews, I'm surrounded by kids' entertainment, most of which is downright intolerable. I've been taken in by the charm and wit of Phineas and Ferb. Miraculously, Phineas and Ferb appeals to kids of all ages, including this 30-something year old teacher. Whilst watching Phineas and Ferb, I can't help but want to turn the entire episode into a workshop on writing. I'm sure this would be appreciated by all of the surrounding kids, but alas there's a time and place, right? So I've created the perfect time and place for a discussion of Phineas and Ferb! I hope your learners will come and join me.
