Class Experience

Canada's political system has a long history full of tradition and custom. But how does it work? What political parties does Canada have and how do Canadians vote? How are bills passed and who is really in charge? How is Canada's political system different from others?

In this class, students will be introduced to the basics of Canada's political system including the role of Parliament, how governments are formed, how Canadians vote, what is the function of the Cabinet and what role each member of the government plays. They will also be taken on a virtual tour of Parliament Hill and learn how bills are passed in Canada. As well, students will be introduced to the Canadian constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. At the end of class, students will have the opportunity to examine the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by analyzing fictional case studies and seeing how the Charter applies to each.

This class is primarily lecture based. Students will be taken through a slide presentation and are encouraged to take notes and ask questions throughout the class. As well, students will be analyzing images and sharing their observations with both the teacher and their classmates. There will be time for several discussions and question periods.
