Can You Talk About What Is Happening in Your World?

Let's explore our world events! Reading and investigating what is happening in our world is only 1/2 of our knowledge. The other 1/2 is being able to talk about it!

Class Experience

In this class, we will read about events happening in our world, that applies to us! Students are encouraged to seek out additional information in order to have a conversation about the weekly topic.

We will use our reading and conversation skills by practicing and exploring:
*Do you agree or disagree? Why? (Listening and being Kind)
* Why do you think the author used this word/phrase? (Word study)
* How did someone's comment change your opinion? (Being open-minded)
* How can you express your thoughts on this topic? (Stating your opinions clearly and kindly)
* Not sure about the topic, what questions can you ask? (Effective questioning)

Each week, I will send out an article. These articles will be age appropriate and focused on a variety of topics that are aimed to engage and broaden your child's perspective. Some topics may include "Are sports ruining our brains?", "How can video games make us better thinkers?" "Why are children in other countries working and not going to school?", etc.

As a parent and 5th grade classroom teacher, I will be mindful of the topics shared in this class. Should you decide that the article assigned for that week is not a good fit for your family, we can easily change sessions.

Since these classes are discussion based, a successful class needs learners. I will wait 15 minutes inside the classroom. Should no learners arrive after the 15 minutes, I will exit the classroom, unless prior communication has occurred. I appreciate your understanding.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Rhonda Martinez and I am a life-long learner! What do I mean by this - well... I love to learn new things every day AND share that learning! Learning is not only a "classroom" idea and not something you have to put on paper for a grade. Learning is through great conversation, hearing other people's ideas and viewpoints, critical thinking skills, and really exploring the 'why'! This is where my passion from learning stems from!

These are the classes I want to teach and explore with your children! Here are some current ideas I have:
 * 'Why are those books banned from the public school system? Why do you agree or disagree with that?'
*'Let's write an opinion paper by analyzing both sides so we can truly understand why some people have
a different viewpoint than you! This is what a constructive opinion essay looks like!'
 * Fractions, Decimals, Percents, 'oh my!' Let's go shopping and see why you truly need to know why you
need this 'stuff'! I can share some shortcuts (mental math tricks) with you!

I am currently a 5th grade teacher by day and an adult English language teacher by night. In between those times, and always!, I am helping my two children with their learning! I have a Master's Degree from McDaniel College (Westminster, MD) which allows me to teach Elementary Education 1st - 6th grade, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) to Kindergarten - 12th grade, and Language Arts/English to 5th - 9th grade.

So who am I, really? I have two beautiful children who wants to be a zoologist neurosurgeon and a lawyer (and wow can he argue!). I have two cats and a hedgehog! I discovered an unknown passion of running and am proud to say that I have completed several half marathons, many of those in Disney! I cannot get enough of Disney, Harry Potter, reading, dancing, and enjoying delicious coffee!

I am excited to meet you and hope to see you in the classroom soon!
