Homework
1 hour per week. No homework completion is required. However, one or more optional practice worksheets might be available in the classroom after class. Helpful tips learned during class will also be available in the classroom after class.
Assessment
Each week the reading passages, helpful hints and optional practice page(s) will be posted in the classroom asap after class. The parent/learner has the option to upload the completed practice page to send to the teacher for feedback and an optional grade. Session/week 4 will be a review of weeks 1-3 and session/week 8 will be a review of weeks 4-7. Learners will need paper and a pen or pencil for these review weeks to write down practice questions to answer on their own during class. During these two review weeks, the reading passage from our session and three review/assessment question sheets will be posted in the classroom after class for each of the skills. If learners/parents would like the review/assessment answers checked for accuracy, they will have the option to send the three completed pages as an attachment in a private message to the teacher. If you would like a grade as well, please let me know.

📝 Contact me with schedule requests if you don't see a day/time that will work for your learner so I can check my availability (sorry, no weekends).

🗓Please check out the syllabus to determine which section or sections you want your learner to enroll based on the semester you plan to enroll. A different comprehension skill will be targeted each week. There are different reading passages for the summer (June-August) than there are during the school year.

This class has a very small max class size with a limit of 6 learners to allow the teacher to give more individualized attention to those learners to help each one improve and/or practice reading fluency and/or learn skills to help increase comprehension.

In this 8-week quarter (one session per week) class, learners will take turns reading portions of a passage. (Unless the parent/adult notifies me prior to class, each learner will be expected to read aloud during class.) I do my best to make our class a safe place for learners to feel comfortable practicing reading skills. However, if your learner does not want to read aloud, no problem, we will work on improving auditory skills. If you don't want your learner to be called on to read aloud, it is best to let me know this as soon as your learner is enrolled.

During the read aloud portion of the class we will work on sounding out words, pronunciation of words and learn that some words are not easily sounded out and need to be learned by sight or follow certain reading "rules". We will work on reading fluency and speed as well as meanings of words in the passage. Some learners think that faster is better, yet they miss words or don't slow down at commas or pause at periods. This affects reading comprehension. So we will practice these skills as well.

**Remember each section is 8 weeks (1 day each week). Enroll in one section or more.

Over the years I have loved helping children and teens from 2 years old to 19 improve their speech, language, auditory, phonics, reading and brain fitness skills and much more. I meet my students where they are at their level. As I teach, I adjust to help reluctant learners as well as others who may need or want more challenge. I have decades of experience teaching each of these types of learners within the same class. I try to make my classes engaging and fun. I have a wide range of experience that includes teaching those on the autism spectrum, learning disabled students, add/adhd and many more areas of concern, as well as, experience teaching regular and gifted learners. I have found that patient encouragement in a structured and energetic yet relaxed classroom environment helps learners brains focus to receive information better and helps them become detail oriented.
