Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
Intermediate Level
📝 Contact me with schedule requests if you don't see a day/time that will work for your learner so I can check my availability (sorry, no weekends).

🗓Please check out the syllabus to determine which mini-course section or sections you want your learner to enroll based on the month of the year and the week(s) of the month you plan to enroll. A different comprehension skill will be targeted each week. Skills repeat every 4 months. However, a different selection is read each semester and summer.

This has a very small max class size with a limit of 5 learners to allow the teacher to give more individualized attention to learners to help each one improve and/or practice reading fluency and/or learn skills to help increase comprehension.

In this three day (1 session per week for 3 weeks) mini-course, learners will take turns reading portions of a passage. (Unless the parent/adult notifies me prior to class, each learner will be expected to read aloud during class.) I do my best to make our class a safe place for learners to feel comfortable practicing reading skills. However, if your learner does not want to read aloud, no problem, we will work on improving auditory skills. It is best to let me know this as soon as your learner is enrolled.

During the read aloud portion of the class we will work on sounding out words, pronunciation of words and learn that some words are not easily sounded out and need to be learned by sight or follow certain reading "rules". We will work on reading fluency and speed as well as meanings of words in the passage. Some learners think that faster is better, yet they miss words or don't slow down at commas or pause at periods. This affects reading comprehension. So we will practice these skills as well.

**Remember each section is 3 days (once per week for 3 weeks), and each day we meet for 40 minutes. Enroll in one section or more. The sections do NOT build on each other.**

***I also offer an ongoing/enrichment version of this class: https://outschool.com/classes/semi-private-reading-listening-comprehension-4th-5th-grade-ages-9-11-sfIsRUFz

In addition, I offer ongoing (enrichment) and short course versions of this class for ages 7-9 and 11-14, as well as, 1 on 1 private tutoring where I can customize further the material to meet your learner's needs. Please check out my profile with class lists or contact me for more information.

Over the years I have loved helping children and teens from 2 years old to 19 improve their speech, language, auditory, phonics, reading and brain fitness skills and much more. I meet my students where they are at their level. As I teach, I adjust to help reluctant learners as well as others who may need or want more challenge. I have decades of experience teaching each of these types of learners within the same class. I try to make my classes engaging and fun. I have a wide range of experience that includes teaching those on the autism spectrum, learning disabled students, add/adhd and many more areas of concern, as well as, experience teaching regular and gifted learners. I have found that patient encouragement in a structured and energetic yet relaxed classroom environment helps learners brains focus to receive information better and helps them become detail oriented.
