This class is an introduction to making video games with Unity -- one of the most popular game engines in the world! We will be learning the basics of the Unity software and see how a game is created, using some simple scripts we'll write and some that will be provided before class. All video games have the same components at their core -- whatever kind of game you want to make, this will be a great start towards making it. Whether it's a puzzle game, first or third person game, a platform game, or maybe a VR escape room game -- whatever you can think of, you can build it in Unity! We won't cover all that in this class, of course, but this class is designed to get you comfortable enough using the game engine to start experimenting. This is primarily a live demonstration class. I'll be walking you through what I'm doing while I'm doing it, and more importantly -- talking about why I'm doing it! So often, video tutorials just don't tell you why to do something, so you just don't know how to apply that to your own projects. Explaining why I'm doing what I'm doing is very important to me, because it's very important to the learner understand that so they know how to apply it to their own projects when the time comes. Don't worry -- even though it's primarily a live demo, you'll have a chance to ask questions about what I'm doing along the way. And I'll be providing the .unitypackage scene and script files we create once it's over (so you can get the same exact results), and the video will be available for replay as well. Some learners may want to follow along and do what I'm doing onscreen live, while I'm doing it, but that's not always optimal for all learners. It's okay! I'll be providing my project files once it's over (so you can examine my exact results), and the video will be available for replay as well. Many learners find the ability to examine my project files, or go back and watch and re-watch the lesson as needed very helpful. In this foundational class, you will learn: - The basics of Unity, a world-class game engine capable of making nearly anything - How to create, move and manipulate objects, lights and cameras inside of Unity's 3D space - How to import scripts and images and attach them to objects - How to build a game scene from different parts contained within the project - How to export your game so your friends and family can play it! While we're not going to be making super complicated games in this class, the learner will come away with a solid understanding of the Unity game engine and how to start making their own games. No previous experience in Unity or programming required.
Learning Goals
After this class, learners will feel confident with the basic Unity interface and understand how to create and play some simple game examples.

Parental Guidance
For this course, we will be using the Unity game engine if learners want to follow along in this class and build their own game. Unity offers a free personal account (and that's all that is necessary) but it does require a parent to sign up for the account.
To install Unity, you should start with installing the Unity Hub from https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download and click "Download Unity Hub"
Once you install and run that, you can create a free personal account and install the latest "LTS" release.
Unity runs on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux -- but not an iPad or Chromebook.
The official system requirements are as follows:
OS: Windows 7 SP1+, 8, 10, 64-bit versions only; Mac OS X 10.12+; Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04, and CentOS 7.
GPU: Graphics card with DX10 (shader model 4.0) capabilities.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach kids who love to play video games how to make video games!
There's nothing quite like having an idea in your head and bringing it to life in a game to let other people see it and play it, too. I love teaching others how to do that.
I've been programming professionally for over 25 years, and most of the last 12 have been spent making mobile apps and games for mobile and desktop. I've done it enough and seen the beginning and the end of so many projects, I've got it down to a science on how to teach these skills to others.
I've also been using 3D software for most of that time to create animations, renders and objects to put in my games. I'm no artist, but I know how to manipulate the 3D to get what I need from it for my games!
The reason I'm doing what I'm doing is because when I started learning how to do programming in the 80's... there weren't even a lot of people with computers, much less people who knew how to program, MUCH LESS people who knew anything about making games -- not that you could ask, anyway. You couldn't google it, watch a video on it and you couldn't even go to store and buy a book about it, unless you were *really* lucky and they had one that you didn't already have, which rarely happened. If you got stuck... you just had to keep pressing on until you figured it out. Help was not coming.
So I'm trying to be the person that I always wished I had when I was learning... not only someone who has "been there, done that" -- but understands what it's like to be stuck and frustrated because nobody can help you.
