Class Experience

This class is for students with an interest in or passion for writing! Writers of all skill levels are welcome!

In this class, students will be guided through the planning and writing process of a short story. PLEASE NOTE: Students will have the opportunity to complete all of the assigned writing in class! As detailed below, there will be three days of class where around 20 - 25 minutes of class will be dedicated to writing our stories. This is so students have the time specifically set aside to write and have the instructor available to assist and guide them should they need it.

Students will also learn about English concepts such as point of view, genre, and certain diagrams that can be helpful in the writing process. Some concepts discussed will be character and world development, the Hero's Journey, and plot diagrams.

On Monday, students will be introduced to these and other basic concepts. We will work with writing and word prompts to learn more about how to apply these to writing and to get our creative ideas flowing! Students will be instructed to have at least the beginning of an idea that they would like to write about for the rest of the week.

On Tuesday, students will work together and with the teacher on further developing their ideas, characters, and the world in which the story will take place.

For the rest of the week, students will actively write their short stories with guidance from the teacher and feedback from classmates. For the first half of class, students will be partnered together and will give feedback to their peers, as well as receive feedback from the teacher and engage in discussion as a group about the stories we have come up with and what part of the plot we will be working on that day. For the second half of class, students will work on their story. The final five to ten minutes of class each day will be a check in with students to briefly discuss their progress and answer any other questions that they may have.

On Wednesday, we will work on the introduction to our stories, on Thursday the middle, and on Friday the conclusion.
