Class Experience

OUR CLASS
This FLEX class takes place asynchronously, with no live meetings. Each Monday videos, supplies, and assignments will be posted to get you through the week’s material. Every two weeks we will add 20-30 new words to our Latin Vocabulary List.

⭐️ Students will take a picture of their assignment to upload to the classroom after completing
⭐️ Students will be asked to respond to the discussion questions that will be posted in the classroom
⭐️ Each chapter has two Kahoot quizzes that reviews the vocabulary, grammar, and culture questions
⭐️ Two weeks are assigned to each chapter to allow students to fully comprehend the material, without rushing
⭐️ I will introduce you to BIG words, and how to use them! Such as: Pugnacious, Ludicrous, Diligent, Circumference

Asynchronous courses are great for students who prefer a flexible schedule

What I once saw was a drag, has turned into one of the greatest joys of my life! From learning about Roman culture, catching a travel bug, and traveling all over the heart of the Roman Empire: Italy, to knowing the etymology of 60-90% of English language words and being able to easily read and communicate in the Romantic Languages - knowing Latin is a treasured gift!

I love giving back to the community, and I am excited to offer this class.

In Unit 1, we are introduced to the Pompeian banker Lucius Caecilius Iucundus and his family until the eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, AD 79. As we follow his life, in story-format, we are introduced to the Latin Language as well as the Roman world.

Although not specifically designed for homeschool use, it is hard to beat the combination of history, culture, grammar, and literature found in this immersion-based Latin program! Cambridge Latin gets students reading and comprehending in Latin right away.

🗺 Each each stage in the text opens with illustrations captioned with short sentences or paragraphs in Latin.
🗺 Followed by a vocabulary list that includes the Latin words used in the captions.
🗺 Reading passage, also entirely in Latin, and another vocabulary list.

Following the Latin immersion passage, youll find two sections which focus on language - "About the Language," and "Practicing the Language." In the first section, students will read simple explanations of Latin grammar and syntax, while example sentences (in Latin) are also given. The bulk of the text exercises are found in the "Practicing the Language" section, where students use their Latin reading, grammar, and usage skills to translate and complete sentences, change parts of speech into different forms, and more.

The text is enhanced by full-color photos of artifacts, ruins, and period artwork, and in my sample of Unit 1, topics include gladiatorial shows, Roman beliefs about life after death, the work and treatment of slaves, education, local government and elections, and much more.

⭐️ Word study: focuses on English words derived from Latin and includes several exercises which explore the Latin roots and the English meanings.
⭐️ Word Patterns: which are only found in the last two units, exercises practice Latin vocabulary, grammar, and usage.
⭐️ Vocabulary Checklist: located at the very end of each stage and lists the important Latin words (and their English translations) which were learned in that stage.

At the end of each units text, there are summaries for grammar, word order, usage, and a complete Latin-English vocabulary index (alphabetized by Latin word). An index of cultural topics, an index of grammatical topics, and a time chart spanning 2500 B.C. to 1945 A.D. for Rome, world history, and world culture are also included in each textbook.

As we are introduced to vocabulary words, we will seek to link them to words we know in English as well as new words to build our vocabulary such as…

🌊 🌊 Undulate - to move up or down, which comes from the Latin word “Unda”, meaning Wave
🪟 🪟 Defenestrate - to throw someone out the window, which comes from the Latin word “Fenestra”, meaning Window

Part II of this class covers the second half of Cambridge Latin Course - Unit 1, after which time students will be prepared to take the National Latin Exam - Introduction to Latin online in March of 2024
