Class Experience

In "Calling All Detectives! Nancy Drew Novel Study: #1 The Secret of the Old Clock", students will engage in an interactive novel study based on the first book in the classic Nancy Drew series.
Student will learn through a combination of independent reading, peer discussions and teacher-led activities.

Class time will be structured in the following way:

Week 1: Students should come to class with "The Secret of the Old Clock"; no reading needs to be completed before our first meeting. Class expectations and schedules will be reviewed. Required homework after Week 1 class concludes: read Chapters 1-5, stopping at Chapter 6. Important: do not read ahead--you'll risk discovering the mystery before your classmates!

Week 2: Prior to attending Week 2, students should read Chapters 1 - 5, stopping at Chapter 6. During class, we'll work together to complete the "Character Traits" list, as well as the "3-2-1" worksheet. While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of Chapters 1 through 5. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. Required homework after Week 2 class concludes: read Chapters 6 - 10, stopping at Chapter 11. Important: do not read ahead--you'll risk discovering the mystery before your classmates!

During class, we'll work together to complete the "Cartoon Strip" worksheet, as well as the "Statements" prompt. While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of Chapters 6 through 10. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. Required homework after Week 3 class concludes: read Chapters 11 - 15, stopping at Chapter 16. Important: do not read ahead--you'll risk discovering the mystery before your classmates!

Week 4: Prior to attending Week 4, students should read Chapters 11 - 15, stopping at Chapter 16. During class, we'll work together to complete the "Yes/No" questions chart, as well as the "Diary" entry. While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of Chapters 11 through 15. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. Required homework after Week 4 class concludes: read Chapters 15 - 20. Make sure you have completed the entire book before attending our final Week 5 class meeting.

Week 5: Prior to attending Week 5, students should read Chapters 16 - 20, completing the book in its entirety. During class, we'll work together to complete the "SWBST" chart, as well as the "Cause & Effect" graphic organizer. While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of Chapters 16 through 20. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. We'll celebrate the completion of our novel study with a variety of detective-inspired games!

Throughout the course of this 5-week class, students will enjoy a classic novel, while also learning how to organize and speak about their thoughts.
