Laissez les bons temps rouler! In other words, let the good times roll and join me for this weekly cooking class where students will learn how to prepare and cook Louisiana's famous dish Cajun Jambalaya! Students will learn the process for preparing the "Holy Trinity," making a roux from scratch, and bringing to life one of the most flavorful, savor-full dishes from the heart of the bayou! This class will be a demonstration and discussion class, where students learn the origins of each dish and follow along as the teacher leads them through each step of the recipe. To ensure each learner is able to follow along, each step of the recipe will be presented throughout the class, making it easier for all learning types. The class will have students completing the recipe in time to taste and discuss, while the actual recipe will need additional cooking time to let the ingredients simmer together before enjoying the meal. Not only will students learn about this traditional recipe from Louisiana, but they will also build confidence in their own cooking skills. The ingredients for the class will be posted on the Sunday prior to the class at 8:00 AM Central Time. If by any chance you do not see the ingredients, please message me. Sometimes posts are missing depending on when students enroll in the class. If a recipe contains an ingredient that is an allergy, you are more than welcome to substitute using the suggestions provided on the recipe cards. Since some ingredients are regionally accessible, please look to the suggested alternatives for items that will work.
Learning Goals
By the end of class, students will be able to :
1.) Prepare a recipe from start to finish.
2.) Explain why certain ingredients are chosen for specific recipes.
3.) Demonstrate essential cooking techniques such as prepping, chopping, sauteing, etc.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parental guidance is requested and needed to ensure the learners are safe throughout the lesson. Students may need assistance with using kitchen tools like knives, ovens, stoves, etc. Should you have an allergy to one of the ingredients, please contact me so I can provide a substitution.
When a class requires additional cooking time, the class will end once the item is placed in the oven to bake, or left on the stove to simmer. Students will be given a set time to know when the item is fully prepared and ready for them to taste test.
Supply List
Students will need basic kitchen tools, such as pots and pans, measuring spoons and cups, oven mitts, cooking spoons and spatulas, etc. Specific ingredient and tool lists will be provided by the teacher once your child enrolls in the class. This recipe card will be posted in the Outschool classroom under the Welcome Post for Learners. While some recipes will call for specific tools, alternatives are okay and will be included on the recipe card.
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Since I was a preteen, I always found myself in the kitchen, watching my mom prepare delicious recipes, many of which from her hometown deep in Cajun Country. Seeing my interest, she began using me as her Sous Chef, when preparing many of the cajun dishes for our family. Today, I host a cooking club with my students, where we discuss methods of cooking various dishes. With Outschool, I can do the same for more learners, while adding the hands-on component of guided participation.
