Class Experience

Beginner Level
In this one-time class workshop, students will learn about the art of illustration in the style of Tim Burton. We will explore the commonalities among his characters and use similar characteristics in the creation of our own spooky and whimsical self portraits.

We will discuss illustration and artistic style and develop visual art vocabulary and language through an artist critique of the work of Tim Burton.
Elements of art will be discussed, and students will gain a strong understanding of how artists use VALUE to create the illusion of 3-dimensional form through hands on practice.

When students enter my classroom, I will have a "bellringer" activity allowing students time to come into the class, get settled, say hello and engage with the activity. This will allow me to say hi, learn something about each student, and recognize students who are on time and ready to interact before we get started with our drawings.

I encourage students to raise a hand if they have questions or need feedback in attempts to minimize major classroom disturbances. Students will be given dedicated time to ask questions or show me their progress prior to the end of class time, just in case we have to squeeze in a lot of material without as much opportunity to answer questions earlier on in class time. I do my best to try to accommodate questions throughout, but this gives us a safety net of time dedicated to questions. I will also provide ways for students to share their work, respond to other classmates, and receive individual feedback from me throughout the week after the class has ended. I will offer parents and students access to video recordings of our time in class, as well as the project tutorial and instructions.

We will use technology for interactive activities and students will begin their art project with their physical art materials. We use our class time exploring the art media, and experimenting with our project. As class time comes to an end, I will give instructions about how to complete and submit their assignments for review and feedback.
