In this one-time class, students will use building materials (such as duplo blocks or _______ *rhymes with tegos* I cannot write the word due to copyright law) to learn about counting, patterns, and addition/subtraction number sentences. I believe active, hands-on learning is the best way to engage students in a fun and educational way. This engaging class is perfect for preschool or pre-K aged learners. Here is a breakdown of this class. 1. Greeting: We will start out by greeting each other by singing a hello song. 2. Sharing Time: Everyone will have the opportunity to share their building materials that they’ll be use to make small towers. This is a great way to get students comfortable with classmates and getting to know each other. 3. Finger Play - We will engage in a finger play which will incorporate counting, movement and mid-line concepts. 4. Math Concepts - Together we'll build towers while practicing number recognition and counting. We'll add more and take away to create simple number sentences. Students will have a chance to make up their own number sentences too. 5. Make Patterns - We'll spend some time making different patterns with our building materials. ABAB, ABC, AABB, etc. will be a few patterns we investigate. 6. Game - We'll play a matching game that will give students a chance to practice their number identification and subitizing skills. 8. Read Aloud - Our final activity will be a read aloud: Pete The Cat & His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin. My classroom is a safe place full of engaging and fun learning! I am energetic, patient and kind. I try to encourage lots of student output in different ways to include all types of learners (song, movement, sharing, reading). There is no required experience or knowledge learners need. Come ready to have fun and learn some important pre-literacy skills.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their math skills while having fun with building materials.
