Beginner Level
This is a flex class, so students will NOT meet live via Zoom. This course will introduce various strategies to overcome challenges with executive function. Students will learn meaningful + relevant tools + strategies that they can implement in and out of school to prepare for all of life's challenges. Skills taught within this course consist of goal setting, time management, task initiation, planning, prioritizing, organizational skills + study skills. Session 1: Intro to Executive Function Skills + Setting Short + Long-Term Goals Students will brainstorm some of their own short + long-term goals. Students will be given goal goal-setting sheets to complete during or after class. Session 2: Metacognition + Working Memory + Study Hacks: How to strengthen + why we should Students will be learning different self-reflection strategies and why they are important for building strong executive function skills. Students will be given different templates to practice self-reflection, participate in some working memory challenges and learn simple + effective study skills to make the most of their time. Session 3: Planning, Prioritizing + Organizing: 3 skills that piggyback off of one another so it's best to teach these together Students will be introduced to different strategies to overcome challenges in these 3 areas. Students will have to decide on what type of planner they will begin to use, digital or analog. Students will begin adding one day's worth of tasks into their preferred planner. Session 4: Overcoming Procrastination: tips + tricks that actually work on improving task initiation (procrastination) & Time Management Tools + Strategies: learn how to become more self-reliant Students will learn multiple strategies to overcome procrastination. Students will also learn how to strengthen their time management skills. Students will be asked to complete a personal inventory of how they spend their days. How much time do they spend on various daily tasks? This inventory will be provided. Students will also be asked to utilize a timer when beginning unpreferred tasks. Students will review 1 pre-recorded video each week (length of video on average is 30 minutes)--each covering a different executive function. Each student will have related homework assignments to complete and submit to the Outschool classroom page using typed posts or the Add Video link to present their work Students will get teacher feedback on all of their posts with additional tips, tricks or strategies as applicable. Each lesson is taught through direct instruction utilizing slide presentations, personal examples, guided worksheets, checklists, task cards and class discussions. * THERE ARE FOUR WEEKS OF POSTED CONTENT TO THIS FLEX COURSE. SOME SECTIONS ARE GIVEN FIVE WEEKS OF ACCESS WHERE THE TEACHER HAS AGREED TO BE "ON CALL" TO RESPOND TO POSTS AND MESSAGES FOR AN EXTRA WEEK IF THERE IS A US FEDERAL HOLIDAY DURING THAT SECTION'S DATES *
