In this course your learner will learn and build upon their number sense in order to strengthen their building blocks to mathematics. Each week we will focus on a topic through class discussion, teacher modeling, and student practice. This is part 1 of 6 courses that will cover six important mathematical concepts and principals for elementary students. They may be taken independently from one another. Week 1: Equivalents Students will learn that there are numerous ways to show and represent a number. They will use numerical numbers, words, tally marks, pictures, dice, and coins. Week 2: More & Less Students will compare numbers and identify which are more or less. They will use numerical numbers, pictures, a number grid, and a number line to represent these comparisons. Students will be introduced to and use greater than, less than, and equal symbols. Week 3: Estimation Students will learn how to estimate a numeric value in relation to previous information. They will practiced estimating through pictures and models. Students will discuss the importance of estimating and real life uses. Week 4: Place Value Students will learn the value of ones, tens, and hundreds in a number. They will learn about digits and use base ten blocks to practice this skill. Learning Goals
Students will build their number sense and understand what numbers represent and how they compare to others. They will become comfortable with the following topics listed. The goal is for each student to build upon their current skills and feel confident in solving math problems independently. Each student will learn multiple strategies for solving problems in order to think and work efficiently.
