Class Experience

In this class, students will explore the workings of simple ecosystems and build one for themselves. The lesson will open with a discussion of what ecology is and why it's important. We will briefly discuss the key players in ecosystems and how they connect in a food web; this is an excellent time for students to bring up their own examples.
Next, it's time to get our hands dirty and begin building our terrariums. A list of ingredients will be made available to learners enrolled in this class. As we add components to our jars I will explain the importance of each and what it represents from the real world. Once complete a well-tended terrarium can last for years. We will end the class by discussing the care of terrariums and what to do when things go wrong.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how the basics of how interconnected ecosystems work and the distinct roles of plants, animals, and fungi. Ecosystems are all around us and it is the goal of this class to have your child thinking critically about they work. If you would like to reinforce the lessons of this class, I have included a list of questions to ask your child when around nature. They are open-ended without exact right or wrong answers and have the goal of making them think about the natural world around them.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a Paleontologist with a background in the evolution of Bats and their brains. I teach a variety of courses focused on the evolution and behavior of life on this planet. It's my goal to give students the background necessary to begin to see the interconnectivity between not only the life around them but also all the species that have lived over the past 4 billion years.
Each of my classes will include an interactive game or activity where students can put what they've learned into practice and more thoroughly understand the way biology works. I recommend these courses to any student seeking to study biology in high school or university.
If you want something a little more interactive then my "DIY Terrarium" class is for you. In a one hour hands-on tutorial, I'll demonstrate how to build a miniature ecosystem in your own home using simple everyday items.
See you in class.
