Class Experience

Join this ongoing class for a chance to build your literacy skills as you learn to identify letters and their sounds with building bricks (such as Legos, Duplos, or Mega Brands). Each week of this course will explicitly teach one letter from the alphabet. Letter identification, sounds, and handwriting will be practiced through movement, song, peer interaction, games, and of course hands-on building! This class truly offers ways for all learning styles to make connections and grow. A building challenge will be presented at the end of each week for learners to complete and share the following week.

For each class, learners will need a selection of building bricks, a building board/mat, and an optional provided handwriting page. If you are unable to print for any reason, a blank piece of paper works well. An optional printable activity will be provided for further practice after class.

Letters will be introduced systematically throughout the duration of this class. Learners can join the fun at any point in this ongoing class. The order letters are introduced will benefit your learner in the following ways:
-Help to differentiate between letters that that sound or look similar (e.g., e/i, p/q).
-Learn sounds that are more-easily heard and produced early on (e.g., /z/, /m/).
-Begin with sounds of letters that can be used to build many words (e.g., t, n, a, r).

Upcoming classes will focus on the following letters:

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I’m Caity, mom of two girls (ages 3 and 1), a once avid runner, aspiring chef, and reading specialist. Here on Outschool, I help beginning readers and their families develop literacy skills, so that they can enjoy the process of becoming confident life-long readers. My classes are student-centered, highly interactive, and blend students’ interests with evidence-based practices. I want to see your learner thrive and have some fun along the way!

I have 10 years of experience as an elementary educator, hold a master’s in literacy instruction, and teaching licenses as a K-6 teacher and reading specialist. Since stepping out of the classroom to stay home with my children, I’ve spent time working with individuals and small groups. I enjoy the opportunity these settings provide to create theme-based instruction that works on core reading skills. My classes for 4-7 year-olds are thoughtfully developed to include engagement, ways for each type of learner to connect, effective instruction on the targeted skill, and fun.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know more about me and my teaching. Please get in touch if you have questions about which classes are the best fit for your child’s goals. No matter where your preschool, kindergarten or 1st-grade child may be in their foundational literacy skill development, I would love to be a part of their journey!
