In this ongoing class, learners meet 1X weekly to build new vocabulary through building new words, one word at a time which improves their academic knowledge, vocabulary and their reading. Learners will learn new vocabulary words that will improve their speaking, reading and writing abilities. They will use a vocabulary map template provided by and under the guidance of explicit vocabulary instruction by their Teacher. Learners will be given one to two new words each session, a vocabulary map, a text or passage that the learners will read. Learners will look up the dictionary definition of a word/s, the origin of the word, part of speech, synonyms, simple sentence/s containing the targeted vocabulary word. Then learners will be given a question to spark discussion among learners of something relatable to the learners' prior knowledge or experience. A second approach in this course for learners will be that learners will be given a base or root word, and learners will build on the base word and develop it into new words. The use of root words, prefixes and suffixes, definition of each word, synonyms and antonyms will be used to strengthen and grow each learner's vocabulary. Step One: 📚pronounce the word Step Two: 📚repeat the word Step Three: 📚write the word Step Four: 📚define the word Step Five: 📚repeat the word Step Six: 📚visualize the word Step Seven: 📚identify the part of speech Step Eight: 📚repeat the word Step Nine: 📚use the word in a complete sentence Step Ten: 📚play a word game The significant 5 R's in Vocabulary Teaching and Learning will be used: 📚Read 📚Review 📚Recycle 📚Reflect and 📚Research A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication — listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University
I'm an avid word game player. I always brought the word games to family gatherings. Even from a young age one of my Christmas gifts was the newest word game. No wonder I became a teacher.
I have taught for over forty years and the best part of that was teaching learners of all ages from 4 to adults on four different continents how to read, a major part of that was building words, a strong vocabulary.
I have been a Principal and a business owner for 21+ years and know the value of a robust vocabulary. That's why I created "Build a Word - Exercises In Building Your Vocabulary," to give your learner a leg up in school now and for their future success.
