Class Experience

In this one-time class, students will learn what a budget is, how to make a budget, how to properly spend a budget, and complete a fun budgeting activity at the end of class!

Class Summary:
-We will start by going over what a budget is and what it is used for. We will learn the importance of making a budget and sticking to it.

-We will transition into "How to Make a Budget" and what that looks like. First, we have to know how much money is in our budget. We will do a counting exercise to see if students can count up to 10. Next, we will learn the difference between Needs vs. Wants. We will learn the importance of buying our Needs before our Wants.

-Next, we will learn practice what we have learned and go over a budgeting scenario. We will start with a budget and take a trip to the grocery store where we will be confronted with a spending choice. Together we will choose which item to buy and deduct the price from out budget (a little bit of easy math!). We will then find out how much we have left in our budget and make a second spending choice. We will try to figure out which second item is in our budget. We will then repeat the exercise with a different scenario to get a better understanding of how a budget works.

-To finish it off, we will complete a budget activity with the remainder of class time and will go over any questions students may have. A printable handout will be provided and will need to be printed prior to class. Students are encouraged to bring crayons or markers to class.

A few important things to note about my class:
-A printable handout is provided to learners to print and complete at the end of class. Please remember to also bring a writing utensil.

-For this class, I will be using an online student engagement platform called Nearpod. I like to use Nearpod to create fun, interactive lessons for my students in my live classes. Instructions on how to use Nearpod will be provided in the Welcome Letter upon enrollment.

-I will mute all students when needed to minimize background noise. Please make sure your learner either knows how to mute/unmute or I ask that you sit with them during class so they are able to share when it's their turn. From the teacher's side of Zoom, we can only "ask to unmute" but the student will have to click the button to actually unmute themselves.

I am so excited to meet your learner in my class! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is May Dulce but I like to go by Ms. Candy! I have a B.S. in Business Management, 6 years of teaching experience and have a creative way of making learning fun and exciting! I am from Phoenix, Arizona, USA, born and raised!

I have been working on Outschool for over a year now, teaching finance, Spanish, and occasional arts and crafts classes. I have four years of experience working as a K-12 tutor for Grand Canyon University's Outreach Program, where I assisted students with homework, scholarship advice, as well as encouraged students and built up their academic confidence by providing positive feedback.

I am a native Spanish speaker and was a Spanish tutor for the four years that I worked at GCU's Outreach Program. I helped young students emerge into the beautiful Spanish language through fun and creative lessons.

I strongly believe that children learn best in an interactive environment, where they can actively participate during class and share their thoughts and ideas. I always encourage my students to use their imagination if they want to have a little extra fun in class and I do my best to bring academic concepts to life with visual and practical learning experiences.

Outside of teaching, I love to travel, make arts and crafts, watch movies, and bake yummy treats! I am also expecting my first baby this March 2022 and am very excited for this next chapter in my life!

Can't wait to meet you all in class!
-Ms. Candy
