Homework
Students will be given homework with each session. Assignments should only take 30 minutes to complete if student has mastered session concepts. Work may be submitted to teacher in between sessions for review and feedback.
Assessment
Parents will be given a follow-up report on student progress based on homework submitted, in-session activities, and final diagnostic.

Class Experience

US Grade 5
Class will be structured to cover major content areas of 5th grade math:  adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals, whole numbers, and fractions  Students will be taught problem-solving strategies using both numbers and pictures to solve word problems.
Session 1: Multiplying multi-digit numbers using standard algorithm and place-value based strategies
Session 2:  Dividing 4-digit dividends by 2-digit divisors using place-value based strategies and standard algorithm
Session 3: Adding and Subtracting Decimals
Session 4:  Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
Session 5: Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions
Session 6: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
All concepts will be explained with examples.  Students will be given the opportunity to work through problems with the teacher as a group followed by practice time with performing basic computation then time solving word problems.  Many students can compute but have difficulty with application.  The class will focus on application through teaching students how to visualize what a problem is saying, draw a picture then work through the numbers to find the answer required.  Teacher will present concept, show examples of problem-solving strategies and give students an opportunity to work example problems with the teacher through guided instruction.  Students will be released to practice concepts independently through game-based learning.  Homework will be given for additional practice.
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of how to analyze word problems to determine which operations to use; students will gain knowledge to increase their skill level to be proficient at 5th grade math and ready for 6th grade 1st quarter.
