Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Your learner will travel together with the class through all of the Holiday Themed "clues" of the escape challenge using their basic skills (numbers, patterns, basic addition, basic subtraction, and alphabet) to unlock the codes and help the Gingerbread Man escape. Once the code has been unlocked by the class, a fitness skill will then need to be completed by the class in order to move to the next "room" and eventually . . . onto Santa's cookie plate.

Learners will be given time to complete the codes by recording their answers on an erasable white board or using paper and pencil. SUPPORT WILL BE GIVEN AS NEEDED along the way. Learners will take turns revealing the codes and leading the count for the fitness exercise.

Examples of the fitness skills include activities such as: 20 one foot hops, 20 elbow crosses, twisting 20 X, stretching for 30 seconds, or 10 toe touches, just to name a few.

Examples of the basic skill prerequisites include:
Basic addition and subtraction, filling in missing numbers, patterning objects and numbers, and ordering numbers. Your child should have some degree of knowledge with basics like these:

4 + 6 = ___
6 - 4 = ___

Fill in the missing numbers or letters:
8, 7, 6, ___, 4, 3, 2, 1
6, 4, 4, 6, ___, 4, 6, 4, 4
O, N, M, L, ___, J, I, H, G

Put the numbers in order:
18, 81, 7, 17, 32, 20

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This is a "practice" class, not an initial instruction of skills class. Support, strategies, and a little basic instruction is given when needed and when students request help, but the basic concepts are needed for registration (no memorized facts required).
Learning Goals
Learners will practice and review basic math including number skills, basic addition, basic subtraction, patterns, and alphabet skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
It's exciting for me to teach 3 types of classes to K- 4 students on Outschool (reading, science, and math) because it's so hard to choose just one!
I am a certified reading specialist with a Masters Degree in reading, and have taught in a variety of capacities in public schools. These include kindergarten, first grade, second grade, college reading courses at Chapman University, many years as a School Reading Specialist, and mentor teacher for my former school district. I am now retired, but I just couldn't stop teaching. Every time I saw that school bus heading down the street, my heart would flutter. So I took my teaching online when I discovered Outschool!
One of my unique passions is teaching children about how their amazing brain works. Because of my huge curiosity, fascination and a great deal of self study, I am able to answer common questions kids have about their brain in a fun and interactive way that makes sense to them. Each Brain Warrior class is designed to help children understand the science of their brain and the things they can do to make their brain stronger. Because we actually have more control over our brain than we think!
And finally, I have recently discovered how much I LOVE writing and creating children's stories using graphic design elements. Having read so many wonderful children's stories aloud in my classroom for 34 years it was finally time to create my own! The stories I have written all have an "escape" element to them. And combining my stories with math skills and exercise . . . the Brain Warriors Escape classes were born!
