1 hour per week. At the end of day 2 a Brain Boss Character worksheet will be introduced. This worksheet will need to be completed before class on day 3. All other worksheets are optional but will be explained each day in class.Class Experience
Students will learn how to control their emotions by gaining a greater understanding of the brain and how it correlates with feelings and reactions. Day 1: We will discuss three different parts of the brain, their jobs, how they connect to our emotions, and different strategies that can be used when we are feeling upset. Provided in the class materials for day one is an Emotion Chart and Calming Cards. Day 2: We will first review the things taught during day one. We will then discuss the correlation between our body and our brains and how they communicate emotional needs to us. We will read a book called "Listening to My Body" by Gabi Garcia where we will see examples of the different sensations our body may experience when we have emotions. We will also practice different coping strategies throughout the book. After the story, we will look at some examples of reactions that one could have to a problem and share ideas of how we can be a Brain Boss and make choices that will help us to calm down and think more clearly. Provided in the class materials for day two is a brain diagram worksheet, and a Brain Boss Character worksheet that will be presented during day 3. Day 3: We will share our Brain Boss Characters with each other. We'll then play a review game to help us remember the names of the parts of the brain that we've been learning about. We'll end with some Brain Boss Affirmations and all learners will receive a completion certificate and a practice worksheet. Provided in the class materials for day three is a Choice Sort Worksheet that can be completed independently after class. Through modeling, pictures, games, books, and practice opportunities- students will gain a greater understanding of what is going on in their own brain and body. This will help them feel more in control of themselves and be a BRAIN BOSS. **This class is not a therapy session, but rather a way for learners to to be able to identify ways that they can self regulate using various strategies.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex, and the hippocampus and their jobs within the brain. They will understand what different emotions could look like and how our brain can send stress signals to our body when feeling overly emotional. Students will be able to recognize the sensations their body may produce when dysregulated and identify different calming strategies that can be used to return to a regulated state.
