Class Experience

Parents: Are you tired of hearing "I'm bored" in that tone (you know the one)? Kids: Are you tired of hearing, "There are tons of things you could do" without hearing any exciting specifics? I am here with the answer for all of you!

One day prior to our first meeting, students will receive an assignment on the Outschool classroom message board. This and all subsequent assignments will be comprised of three parts: a directive (draw a picture of, choreograph a dance about, take a photo of, write a story about, etc.), a subject (your parents, dinosaurs, your pet, your favorite book character, etc.), and an activity (walking on the moon, learning to eat a bowl of cereal upside down, becoming queen of the world, meeting another version of themselves from an alternate universe, etc.). Students are required to complete this assignment before coming to the first class. They will need to be prepared to share their completed assignment with the class.

Days 1-4: Students will share their presentations with the rest of the class. Together, we'll compare and contrast everyone's presentations and discuss the different ideas everyone brainstormed before coming up with final versions. Students will be given the next day's assignments and, if time allows, they can begin brainstorming together if they wish.

Day 5: Same as previous days. In addition, students will be given the instructions and opportunity to create their own Boredom Busting Bags from which they can pull one each of the three parts to complete whenever they find themselves bored in the future.

Parents are encouraged to participate very little, if at all, to allow students to use their own creativity and brain power. Nothing is being graded. There are no red marks for grammar mistakes or fluency errors. There are no wrong presentations or answers. As long as students are engaged, active, and not purposely disrupting others in their creative process, they are doing their jobs.
