US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
When students do not master all the phonemic awareness, phonemes, sight words in kindergarten, they drag those gaps year after year and the gap keeps increasing as they pass to the next grade making it difficult to achieve reading fluency. I will introduce the students to new vocabulary found in the short story Books for Class, Hide and Seek, Ginger the Giraffe, and Doing my Chores. First, we will have a brief exercise to tell the date. Then, I will introduce the vocabulary using flashcards. I will have the students read cards in the words four times or more, but not less. I will keep it very simple. I will focus on teaching key words used in the story. Next, I will use them in sentences. Each use of a word is short, and each simple sentence example is short. I will repeat teaching the same words and phrases with different images in every lesson. Each new word will be repeated with at least three different images and the third one will leave a blank to allow kids to think and use what they just learn. Then, at the end of the lesson, I will show pages of the book where those keywords were used, and nothing more. This keeps it short, simple, direct and is better at keeping the kids’ attention and engagement. The vivid and colorful images will also help to maintain their attention in the lesson I will be teaching. Multiple exposures to words are one of the bases of reading fluency, that is, the speed at which a person reads with comprehension. This group of students must have already verbal fluency because they will be asked to repeat and answer simple questions. Week 1 Two Days ABE the Service Dog: Students will concentrate on the vocabulary of the story. Students will be coached to read the story with assistance if needed. Week 2 Two Days Hide and Seek: Students will concentrate on the vocabulary of the story. Students will be coached to read the story with assistance if needed. Week 3 Two Days Ginger the Giraffe: Students will concentrate on the vocabulary of the story. Students will be coached to read the story with assistance if needed. Week 4 Two Days Doing my Chores: Students will concentrate on the vocabulary of the story. Students will be coached to read the story with assistance if needed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Special Education
I am a special education retired K-12 teacher, certified in reading and language arts. I have the experience of teaching children from 5-8 years old to recognize words or read. By focusing in essential vocabulary, students who did not read and where assigned to my classroom, ended up reading before the end of the school year. Students, parents, and I all celebrated the accomplishments! I know the joy of teaching children to read from the school perspective and from my personal, intimate home. I taught my own children to read before they entered to school.
