Join me in reading "Amari and the Night Brothers" an engaging fantasy by African American author B.B. Alston. In this 6 week flex class and novel study learners will develop comprehension and fluency by reading a fun fantasy book. Learners will demonstrate comprehension through creative projects that involve writing, drawing, and speaking.

Amari and the Night Brothers is a truly wonderful mix of fantasy and reality with a pinch of science fiction. Amari is an intelligent, independent, and thoughtful young black girl who navigates prejudice and negativity with grace. The moment I read the first chapter I knew that I HAD to teach this low reading level high interest book on Outschool. Learners will gain comprehension and fluency by reading and discussing a low reading level, high interest book. They will practice their literacy and public speaking skills by working on creative projects each week.
Bridget Smith is a teacher with ADHD who specializes in supporting neurodiverse learners including students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and dysgraphia on the Outschool learning platform. To date she has taught over 4,000 neurodiverse learners! Bridget holds a BA in World Literature and Cultural Studies. She is a credentialed teacher with a Master's Degree in Education. She is credentialed in the State of California to teach multiple subjects for elementary Schoolers and middle Schoolers as well as English Language Arts to middle school and high schoolers. Bridget holds a B-CLAD credential which gives her additional credentials and experience supporting diverse learners. She is a former dual emersion bilingual teacher and high school ESL teacher.

Amari and The Night Brothers by B.B. Alston (Students can read the book in the way in which they feel most comfortable. This could include the paperback, an e-book with enlarged print, or the audiobook version). Downloading the Kahoot! app on a separate device would make playing easier. Bring paper, something to write with and colored pens or pencils to every class. Many of our activities may involve writing and drawing.
