I have had the pleasure of teaching "Animal Farm" in my Social Studies classes for many years, it is one of my most favorite adult fables and has a very important history lesson hidden within it. Not only do students learn in Social Studies, but they learn in Language Arts as well.

My Teaching Approach:

My journey in education has been enriched by a pursuit of knowledge, including several EDU college credits alongside my undergraduate degrees and a graduate degree in education. Informed by educational theories like constructivism, humanism, realism, idealism, and brain-based learning, I've honed my craft as a high school teacher, embracing the roles of guide, coach, and mentor.

I have adopted a contemporary teaching approach, one thoroughly examined by scholars and supported by compelling statistics. This approach has proven successful in traditional brick-and-mortar schools as well as in virtual educational settings. In my master's and doctoral programs in higher education, it is the cornerstone of our pedagogical philosophy.

In my virtual classroom, I employ a "flipped classroom" model. Here, students engage with assignments prior to our live meetings, where they become the "teachers," sharing their newfound knowledge, interests, and essential insights during the live meetings making it an "open classroom" model too. Students are encouraged to ask questions and make comments, fostering a dynamic and collaborative environment. I actively participate by offering additional information to each student's answers in their assignments along with context. I also participate in the live meetings doing the same thing and creating a shared learning experience.

This method aligns with the "open classroom" philosophy, emphasizing a collective journey toward a common goal: learning while having fun. We collectively dissect the assignments, analyze, and arrive at conclusions during our live meetings. Each session concludes with an introduction and guidance for the upcoming week.

As professional educators, we recognize the shift away from lengthy lectures in live meetings, recognizing that students benefit from interaction. We aim to be coaches, guides, and mentors, both individually and for the entire class. Strategic questioning during discussions facilitates meaningful conversations, creating valuable teaching moments.

The courses I offer are academically advanced and accelerated. To succeed, students must cultivate strong time management skills and maintain a high level of motivation. I don't just teach the material through traditional homework, projects, and review quizzes. I also employ videos, instructional materials, and lively discussions during our live meetings. Moreover, I emphasize teaching students how to learn, encouraging independent research and resourcefulness.

When students present questions, I often guide them to explore answers through internet research, promoting critical thinking and resource evaluation. The same approach is applied when reviewing homework, as I ask supplementary questions that go beyond the textbook, encouraging further exploration.

Through these methods, I empower students not only to learn but to understand how to learn as responsible adults. They gain control over their education, a valuable skill if harnessed effectively.
Homework Offered
I want to assure you that the homework assignments may seem extensive at first glance, but they are designed to be manageable, flexible, and adaptable to each student's individual needs and abilities. Your well-being and comfort are paramount in my class, and I'm more than willing to make accommodations as needed to ensure an enjoyable and effective learning experience for each student. The due dates for homework are intentionally flexible, allowing students to work at their own pace. No student should ever feel stressed or overwhelmed in my class. I understand that every student is unique and may have different capabilities and requirements. Here's an overview of the homework schedule: **Week 1: Chapters 1-4:** - Live Class for an introduction and instruction. - Read chapters 1-4. - Complete four short Chapter Assignments. - Submit one Review Quiz privately to the Teacher for homework. **Week 2: Chapters 5-7:** - Live Class for comprehension, discussion, and Q&A. - Lecture and introduction for the next week's material. - Read chapters 5-7. - Complete three Short Chapter Assignments. - Submit one Small Project privately to the Teacher. - Submit one Review Quiz privately to the Teacher for homework. **Week 3: Chapters 8-10:** - Live Class for comprehension, discussion, and Q&A. - Lecture and introduction for the next week's material. - Read chapters 8-10. - Complete three Short Chapter Assignments. - Submit one Small Project privately to the Teacher. - Submit one Review Quiz privately to the Teacher. - Complete a final project comparing the movie to the book for homework. **End of Week 3: Extra Meeting** - Final Live Class for comprehension, discussion, and Q&A. Additionally, we'll have fun by playing Kahoot games in our live meetings. I'm always available to help and support each student, both during live meetings and every day of the week through private messaging. Remember, the amount of effort a student invests in the class will determine their level of understanding and engagement. This class may be condensed and slightly accelerated, but I'm flexible with the due dates and the amount of homework assigned. Differentiated instruction and assessment are key here – your student's needs come first. If you find that the schedule doesn't align with your student's abilities or requirements after the first week, please reach out to me via private direct message. We can work together to tailor the class to your student's needs, ensuring they enjoy the learning process without feeling overwhelmed. Good time management skills and self-motivation are valuable in this class, as most of the work is self-study. Learning to create a schedule and practice time management will be beneficial. Rest assured that I'm here to provide support, answer questions, offer guidance, and even arrange private one-on-one live video meetings when necessary. Your success and enjoyment are my top priorities.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Even though I don't rely on standard assessments, tests, or quizzes, my approach is more akin to a "portfolio" system. I assess students on a weekly basis, taking into consideration the following criteria: 1. Participation in our live video meetings, held once a week. 2. Active engagement with the weekly assignments, along with their responsiveness to my feedback on their answers. 3. Thoroughness and dedication demonstrated in their work and research on the weekly projects (if assigned), as well as their responsiveness to my comments on their project. 4. Overall engagement in the class as a whole. It's important to note that these assessments are tailored to each student's unique needs, abilities, challenges, and issues. Just as instruction is personalized, assessments are also individualized and crucial for the progress of each student. Let's collaborate to foster a positive and enriching learning experience for your teen. If you have any concerns or suggestions, feel free to share them with me via a private message through your Outschool Parent Account at any time throughout the course! Together, we can ensure a supportive and conducive environment for your teen's education.
Grades Offered
We don't necessarily need to view high school in terms of a full year, long semesters, or any specific timeframe. This rigid approach often results in a lot of time being wasted. Instead, let's consider it in terms of grade levels and credits. Keep in mind that high school credit is earned based on the amount of work and knowledge gained, not on weeks, or months. By adopting this perspective, we can help our teenage learners progress more efficiently. It's essential to remember that while you have the freedom and flexibility to structure your homeschooling, you still need to adhere to your state's home education laws. Legally, parents are recognized as teachers by the Department of Education. However, within these guidelines, you have room for customization. I can issue a certificate of completion for this class along with a letter grade and one credit. You can easily copy, paste, and print the weekly schedule from the Class Description or Learning Outcomes sections to showcase your teenager's progress. As the class nears its end, simply send me a private message through your Outschool Parent Account to request the certificate of completion by the third day after our final meeting if you wish to have one. I refrain from providing grades during the class, but I encourage you to reach out privately for updates on your teen's progress as frequently as you'd like. I value and welcome ongoing parent engagement throughout the entire course. The cumulative grade at the conclusion of the class is determined by considering the following factors: 1. Participation in our once-weekly live video meetings. 2. Active engagement with the weekly assignment combinations and their responsiveness to my feedback on their answers. 3. Thoroughness and dedication demonstrated in their work and research on the weekly project (if assigned), as well as their responsiveness to my comments on their project. 4. Overall engagement in the class as a whole. Feel free to connect with me at any time if you have questions or if you would like an update on your teen's academic journey. I believe that open communication is key to fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. The certificate of completion will include the student's first name, "Outschool," the course name, the course's end date, my full name and title as the Outschool teacher, 0.5 credit (per certificate), and a final letter grade ranging from A to D-. It's worth noting that I don't fail any students, as I believe that everyone, regardless of their level of involvement, gains valuable knowledge from the class. It's important to note that these assessments are tailored to each student's unique needs, abilities, challenges, and issues. Just as instruction is personalized, assessments are also individualized and crucial for the progress of each student. A = Excellent B = Great C = Satisfactory D = Needs Improvement Let's work together to create a positive and enriching learning experience for your teen.
I support unique learning needs by incorporating various teaching methods, offer flexible assignments, flexible due dates, additional resources, & fostering an inclusive environment. I also communicate regularly with students & parents.
This class requires very good time management skills and self-motivation to complete most of the coursework independently. While students work flexibly on their assignments, I'm always available through private messages.
Students should prepare the following items before the start of class:

1. Textbook: A free PDF of the textbook will be available to all students in the Outschool classroom. It will be posted, along with important announcements and further information, one day before the first live meeting. If you prefer a hard copy of the textbook, you can order "Animal Farm" by George Orwell ISBN: 978-0-451-52634-2.

2. Word Processing Software: Students need to have access to and know how to use a word processing program. You can find free options for download online, such as Open Office, Libre, and Ultra Office. Students will occasionally need to submit short essays or answers as documents for certain questions, projects, or quizzes, and attach them as files. These documents should be saved in .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats. Parents may need to assist students in learning how to save documents in these formats. Links to online work document programs like Google Slides and Docs are not permitted.

3. Adobe Spark and Canva Accounts: Teens are required to create free Adobe Spark and Canva accounts to design virtual posters (.jpg) and online slideshows (.mp4), download them to their computers, and then upload them to the classroom as attachments. Parents may need to help their students in setting up Adobe Spark and/or Canva accounts and guide them on different ways to create slideshows, presentations, and photo collages. Creating an Adobe Spark account is easy using this link: https://spark.adobe.com/, and students may also use Canva by signing up here: https://www.canva.com/. Parents may also need to assist their learners in creating their Canvas Classroom account.

4. Kahoot Game: In almost every live meeting, we play a Kahoot game for a fun review. Students should open a separate web browser on their laptop, iPad, or mobile phone, navigate to "kahoot.it," and participate in the quiz together during the live meeting. An account is not needed for Kahoot.

5. Canvas Account: Parents may need to help their teens create a free Canvas account. Information and access codes for my Canvas classroom, where all assignments and work are managed, will be posted in the Outschool classroom the day before the first live meeting. Please refer to the "Parental Guidance" section of this class listing for more details about Canvas.

It is crucial that students familiarize themselves with these materials before the class begins.

**Note**: A very important announcement, including information that your teen will need, will be posted the day before our first live meeting in our Outschool classroom. Your teen must read this and complete the items listed in the post to prepare for the first live meeting. This includes downloading the PDF of the textbook, creating their Canvas account, understanding the class rules, and getting information about Adobe Express, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, and more. Parents will also receive a letter from me on the same day via private message.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Regarding Tuition:

I understand that the tuition structure can sometimes be a bit confusing. Your tuition covers not only the weekly live video meetings but also includes the weekly assignments, projects, and quizzes conducted in our virtual classroom by your student. Additionally, it covers my weekly lesson planning, homework grading, research, active participation in assignments, projects, and quizzes, along with providing valuable feedback, additional content, guidance, and thought-provoking questions for your student's submitted work. I'm also committed to responding to both student and parent private messages within 36 hours, offering private guidance and assistance to students, and facilitating private, one-on-one live video meetings if requested by either students or parents. Rest assured that I'm personally engaged in the classroom, working tirelessly to support your child's educational journey seven days a week throughout the entire course. In essence, the weekly "$21 per Class" displayed next to the total tuition on the class listing truly translates to "$21 per Week" in my class. It's important to note that Outschool retains 30% of the total tuition to cover their operational costs.

A Special Note about Outschool and Canvas Classrooms:

The live video meetings and private messaging, both between your student and me and between you and me, are all conducted on the Outschool platform. I also use the Outschool platform to post weekly announcements. However, when it comes to assignments, projects, and reviews, we utilize my Canvas Classroom platform. This platform is designed to be more user-friendly and less confusing than the Outschool classroom for my particular courses. In the Canvas Classroom, students have the flexibility to create their own discussion threads, avoiding the lengthy threads typically found in the Outschool classroom. Moreover, the Canvas Classroom offers a range of features and options that Outschool does not currently provide. I've taken special care to secure the Canvas Classroom for your child's privacy, trust, and safety, protecting against any unwanted online interactions.

Your student will be required to create a simple and secure Canvas Classroom account, using a secret passcode that will be provided two days before the first live meeting in the Outschool classroom. They'll then establish a straightforward Canvas Classroom student account and send a request to join this specific class using the passcode and their exact name as listed on their Outschool account. I personally verify that their request to join the Canvas Classroom matches their Outschool information and manually approve their request.

Once your student is enrolled in the Canvas Classroom, you have the option to request the parent access code for Canvas, if you wish. Simply go into your student's Canvas account to create a simple parent account and list yourself as an "observer". Please be aware that Outschool Support and Outschool's Trust & Safety departments have full access to my entire Canvas Classroom platform in "teacher mode." This ensures they can monitor and address any issues, concerns, or problems that may arise, providing an additional layer of security and oversight.

If you have any questions or concerns about any aspect of our learning environment, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your child's education and safety are of the utmost importance to me.

FROM: Outschool...
While our open community is our greatest source of strength, it also brings challenges. It is important to us that Outschool is a safe space for our users. Our members should treat each other without bias or prejudice across all pillars of diversity including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and gender identity. Down below are Outschool's Parent and Learner guidelines that we ask our members to observe. Outschool members who do not meet these guidelines will be removed from the site.

PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT:

1. Learners should only attend class under their own enrollment, as themselves. It violates Outschool policy for a learner to use their sibling’s or another learner’s enrollment to attend class. Learners may only join a live meeting by using the green button in their class on their Outschool Learner Account. Educators are forbidden from sending links and passwords to Zoom live meetings.

2. Ask questions of teachers to clarify any missing details about classes, important information about your learner, and fill out your learner's profile such as age, gender preference, and any notes that the educator may need to know about your learner so they may help your learner throughout the class.

3. Make sure your learner shows up for their class; many classes depend on group conversation, and the absence of a single student can have a big impact. If a learner must miss a live meeting please have them notify their educator via a private message under the Teacher tab in their learner account as soon as possible, or you may notify the educator under the Message tab on your parent account.

4. Provide constructive feedback and reviews about your class experience, for the benefit of the teacher and other parents. The same goes for private messages.

5. Engage in civil conversation, and speak and act with respect for different opinions. Check for private messages from your learner's educators and respond promptly. All communication must take place and stay on Outschool.

6. Help keep Outschool a safe space for learners, families, and teachers from all backgrounds, beliefs, and locations. To that end, we encourage you to watch our Trust and Safety Code of Conduct video with your learner. Learners may not share personal information such as email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, gamer tags, social media, etc.

LEARNER CODE OF CONDUCT:

1. Join the class on time and be ready to learn. Have all of the tools, textbooks, handouts, notes, or anything else the educator has asked of you ready to go before class starts.

2. Be kind: Help all learners feel welcome and included. Give positive feedback to your fellow classmates.

3. Be safe: Keep your personal information private and never ask other learners for theirs (e.g., email address, mailing address, phone number, gamer tags, etc.). All communication must take place and stay on Outschool.

4. Be respectful: Treat others how you want to be treated. Dress in a manner appropriate for class; please be fully clothed with both a top and bottoms on and sit upright for the class. Treat the teacher and your classmates with respect.

5. Engage & Participate: Contribute to a class environment in a way that is safe and welcoming for learners and teachers from all backgrounds, beliefs, and locations. Take responsibility for making each class a great learning experience for yourself and your classmates: participate, stay on topic, and avoid distractions. Check for private messages from your educator and respond back promptly.

OUTSCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT:

1. We welcome members from all backgrounds, beliefs, and locations and are committed to creating a safe space for our users across all pillars of diversity.

2. We will listen to feedback from parents, teachers, and learners, and make changes accordingly. Send an email to support@outschool at any time!

3. We will create and enforce policies to create a high-quality, trusted, and safe community for learning. This may include removing content or users from the platform.

4. We will respond promptly to questions and issues that arise.

TEACHER CODE OF CONDUCT:

1. Offer classes only where you have the appropriate background or expertise.

2. Teach classes professionally:

3. Be prepared, begin on time, and treat all learners with respect.

4. Do not teach while impaired and do not model any behavior that a student age 18 or younger is restricted from doing.

5. Respond promptly to parent questions and requests.

6. Communicate with parents and learners in a professional manner, both in messages and in-class.

7. Keep all communications on our platform; never provide personal contact information to parents or learners for “off-platform” communications, or in-person meetings (prohibited unless an Outschool-sponsored event).

8. Adhere to our class content policy by only offering secular, objective, age-appropriate classes

9. Create a safe and welcoming space for learners and families from all backgrounds & beliefs.
