Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this 4 week flex class, students will read J.K. Rowling's novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, examining the development of plot and characters throughout the book.

Each week, students will read the assigned chapters in the novel, write 1-2 sentence chapter summaries for each chapter, complete vocabulary activities, answer reading questions on a Kahoot (a third-party app), examine the setting, themes, and conflicts in the story and how they drive the plot, identify examples of direct and indirect characterization for characters, and complete an extended writing prompt for the assigned chapters. (The Kahoot can be completed anonymously, and does not require students to log in or provide identifying information)

Materials for each week, including instructional activities and videos, will be posted each Monday by 12pm Eastern Standard Time.

At the end of the novel, students will complete a plot pyramid for the entire book, identify and describing the Exposition, Inciting Event, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution/Denouement. They will also have the choice of completing one of several culminating activities, including writing an essay, a creative writing project, or an artistic project that demonstrates a deeper understanding of the book.

Reading Schedule:
Week 1: Chapters 1-5
Week 2: Chapters 6-12
Week 3: Chapters 13-18
Week 4: Culminating Activities

Other Details

Parental Guidance
From Common Sense Media: "This one is tough on kids who are afraid of monsters like giant snakes and spiders. Both attack school kids in tense scenes. Some kids (and a cat) end up in a coma-like state, and two students nearly die in the book's climax. There are also a lot of ghosts, but they are often more silly than scary. Something not in the movie (that otherwise sticks very close to the source material) is Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party, where decapitated ghosts throw their heads around for sport. Main characters Harry, Ron, and Hermione are rewarded for their bravery, but after quite a bit of rule breaking. The story is full of positive messages about friendship and that our choices show what we truly are more than our abilities and backgrounds. " Recommended for kids 8+ Students will use Kahoot to answer weekly reading questions. They will be able to complete the questions anonymously and will not need to log in.
