Class Experience

In this multi day book club class, students will meet 3 times a week to discuss their favorite books. Students will review different types of book genres, discuss how to rate a book, create journal entries by asking self guided questions, and give book recommendations to their classmates. Students will also receive two different book tracking worksheets: a wish-list tracker and a book log. The goal of the class is to build upon the love for reading and to help young/ beginner readers to have a deeper connections for the books they choose to read. Students are encouraged to bring a book of their choice to every session. This will allow the students to share where they are at in the reading process and how the book relates to the type of reader they are. This course is great for students starting to read chapter books, and readers who want to share book titles they are interested in reading. One of the goals for the class is for readers to be exposed to different types of book genres and to learn how to engage in book club discussions.

Session 1:
The instructor will go over each page of the book journal that will be provided to students once they enroll in the course. The book journal will included: Cover Page, Book Wish-list, Reading Journal page, Book log, and book recommendation sheet. In this session, the instructor will give a power point presentation on ways to describe a book, the various book genres, and what questions to ask yourself while you read. The instructor will also go over how the week long course will be conducted. Students are encouraged to bring a book to every session, with the first session focusing on their current favorite book/genre.

Session 2:
Students should be prepared to discuss their thoughts about the book(s) they are reading through their readings journal prompts. What questions did they asked themselves while reading? What are their likes/dislikes about their current book? How is the book supporting them as readers? etc. The students will fill out their book recommendation worksheet prior to class to share with their classmates during this session. Also, students will share with their classmates the progress on their wish-list (what books they have added to it), as well as any completed books they have added to their book log.

Session 3:
The final session will act as an overview/self-reflection of the previous 2 sessions. How has keeping a reading journal helped the students develop as readers? Do students have different genres they are now interested in, why? What book recommendation were helpful? What is your plan of action to complete your book wish-list? The instructor will give a presentation on how to continue growing as a reader, and ways to continue learning about different book genres. The group will also work together to formulate new questions to ask as a reader. Students will also be expected to bring at least one new book recommendation to share in this final session.

Learning Goals
