Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
A truly delightful and enchanting story about the magic of kindness, respect, and the power of friendship! Join Duane, Ms. Carol, and friends as we explore this sweet, endearing story… The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-el.

In the Very, Very Far North, past the Cold, Cold Ocean and just below the hill that looks like a baby whale, you’ll find Duane and his friends.

Duane is a sweet and curious young bear who makes friends with everyone he meets—whether they’re bossy, like Major Puff the puffin, or a bit vain, like Handsome the musk ox, or very, very shy, like Boo the caribou. For these arctic friends, every day is a new adventure!

During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively!

Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 15 chapters in this book. All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, character studies, guessing what happens next, and ending with fun games related to the book. Our last class will be a book party! Snacks are welcome and encouraged!
