The Book of Three is an exciting story written by author Lloyd Alexander. It is the first book in the series called The Chronicles of Prydain. (The well-known Newberry Award book The Black Cauldron is the second book in this series). The Book of Three introduces us to Taran and his friends, as they experience many adventures and risk danger to save an imaginary kingdom called Prydain from evil-doers. The suspenseful plot and realistic characters have made this a special book to me and I am excited to discuss it with your reader!

Each week the learners read (or have read to them) 2 chapters from the book outside of our meeting time, on their own. When we meet virtually during our scheduled meeting time, we discuss what we read. We talk about the characters, plot, setting, and I ask questions to check the children's understanding of the story. The readers also learn new vocabulary words and phrases as we discuss meanings of words that may be unfamiliar to them. We get to know each other as a class as we engage in these discussions!

I am a cheerful, positive, and encouraging teacher. I will not pressure the children to speak in the class, but I will ask many kinds of different and engaging questions to encourage and facilitate discussion by those who want to participate. It is important to me that all of the learners get an equal opportunity to share their thoughts, so I work hard to try to make sure every child has the same amount of time to speak and participate in the discussion.

I have a masters degree in education, a bachelors degree in child development, a TESOL certificate for teaching English, and over 25 years of experience teaching children - including experience as a children's librarian. Book discussions are some of my favorite classes to lead!

This class will meet once a week for 12 weeks.
