No footage or news reports from other sources, other than the actual novel, will be used in class. Parents are urged to read the review of Ground Zero on commonsensemedia.org . Brandon's entrance into the novel begins on 9/11/2000 when he goes to work with his father on the 107 floor of the Twin Towers and Reshminah enters the book on 9/11/19 in her home city in Afghanistan with her village at the forefront of battles between the U.S. armed forces and the Taliban. Brandon recalls seeing people jumping from the towers, burnt and killed and towers collapsing while Reshminah sees first hand the destruction of war. May parallels can be drawn between what both main characters view, in this novel written for middle school readers, built around courage, bravery, determination and inspiration.
