Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this multiday book club, we will read and discuss the two books that follow Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Students should participate in the Hatchet book club before reading these books.
In Hatchet, we know that Brian survived in the wilderness using his wits, common sense, and his hatchet. In The River, we learn what it is like when Brian returns to the wilderness to teach survival skills to Derek Holtzer. As in Hatchet, many incredible things occur, and students are amazed at how Brian is able to survive. In Brian's Winter, we take a look at what it would be like if Brian had not been rescued, and needs to survive in the winter months in the wilderness.
Students will read the books on their own, and use the guided questions as they read. We come together as a group to discuss what we have read.
I am a very hands-on teacher and definitely encourage each student to participate. I am always available to answer any student questions and concerns.
Week one: Discuss and review Hatchet, as well as participate in pre-reading discussions. Homework: Read The River, chapters 1-10 (55 pgs.)
Week Two: Discuss chapters 1-10 Homework: Read chapters 11-17 (50 pages)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!!. My name is Mrs. Beth Lanthier.

I taught elementary school (grades 2-8) for twenty years. My Master's Degree is in Reading and Language Arts - and that is my passion. My favorite moments are when kids who don't like to write, begin to love it!

In the fall, I teach reading, writing, grammar, and College Success Skills to college students

Teaching is my passion, and my philosophy is that the influence of a good teacher can never be erased. I hear back from former students about how I impacted their lives and how they are passing that on to their children.

I will offer classes in reading, writing, English, journaling, and bullet journaling. If you look at my available classes, I offer a lot of book clubs also.

I look forward to passing on my enthusiasm and knowledge to each and every student.
